will NPM monitor file transfers?

I'm new to SolarWinds products and just set up our SW Server less than a week ago, so please bare with me.

Our company has a VM at another location and we have issues with slowness to that file server.

NPM is showing spikes in ping rates up to 400ms and 5% packet loss.

We already know that its an issue with the WAN, but we want a way to measure this bandwidth graphically.

we need data to prove that the issue is with our WAN connection and not local.

Does anyone know how to configure / set this up in NPM? We also purchased licenses for Storage Manager, Application Monitor, IP address ect.

any help would be greatly appreciated!

SAM also has a "Download Speed Monitor" template that will perform precisely this test and show you historical performance.

What evidence are we looking to provide here? You have response time and packet loss issues well established. SAM has FTP user experience templates that will download files and test for success.

i saw that SAM has that capability, yet, wouldnt that require us to open port 21 on that server. I usually dont like to open that port for security reasons.

To somewhat answer your question on what we are looking to provide, we have a free tool that will transfer a file to a network location and measure the time it takes for the file transfer to complete then spit out a report. I would think that SolarWinds has something similar giving the amount of funtionality you have with thier products as well as the price.

Hi There,

When you reference a file server is it a Windows file server? A lot of the discussion so far has been about response time and packet loss which are important metrics. Your reference to bandwidth is also an interesting one. We develop a software product called LANGuardian which integrates with SolarWinds products and it uses a SPAN or mirror port as a source of data.

The video below shows how you can drill down from traffic totals to see what files are been transferred across WAN links. One of our customers also wrote this blog post recently in which they summerize their experiences, they seem to have a similar setup to yourselves with file servers hosted as VMs
