'Session expired' message

We've been running into the below message last few days, anyone else encountered this. Running NPM 12.4, only thing that changed on the box was Windows Updates but can't say for sure that is the cause. Have tried installing the latest HF, this allowed me to log in Friday afternoon but the issue has returned this week. Have tried different browsers, clearing cache etc with no joy. Even snapshotted the VM and reinstalled 12.4 to be sure. Database issue maybe? I did install DPA on the same box a few days before we started having problems.

What happens is we get the usual SW login page, and on entering credentials (domain or local), the Windows security message pops up asking for credentials: if this is cancelled or any credentials entered it then goes to the "Your session expired" message.

Your session has expired. Please log in again.

I don't think this issue has anything to do with NPM. Restore the defaults on browser and give it a try. Hope it helps.

Double check your IIS configuration and ensure that Windows Integrated and Basic authentication is disabled if you aren't using them. By default, the Orion web interface uses Forms-based authentication.

I'm getting this same thing as well. I'm just completing an upgrade to the newest version. I'm upgrading from older versions of NPM and NTA (11.5.3 and 4.1.2 respectively. The upgrade path has me going to 12.0 and 4.2 first, which did work).

@Vinay BY - I have cleared "defaults" on browsers (that link describes only Google Chrome), as well as used a freshly wiped and imaged machine that has never seen our solarwinds website - same behavior as you have described.

@aLTrEGo - If I disable "Windows Authentication", then the Windows security message no longer pops up, but I still get the message that the session expired, the page reloads, and the "session expired" message appears again in a useless, frustrating loop. The Basic authentication feature is not installed on this server.

Can you please try a different browser? It sounds like it may be an issue with Cookies.

That was not the issue. The issue was with some junk left over in the database that the upgrade had left there. Here's the solution that worked for me from customer support. This will most likely not work in cases where you are not migrating the orion web server to a new hostname or new server, but I'm leaving this here for the next weary Googler looking for answers:

If you are getting "your session has expired" message.
You need to run the query below in the Database manager on the Main app server:

DECLARE @oldHostname nvarchar(max)
SET @oldHostname = 'Server1' < ---- Put OLD host name
DECLARE @newHostname nvarchar(max)
SET @newHostname = 'Server2' < ---- Put NEW host name

UPDATE Engines SET ServerName = @newHostname WHERE ServerName = @oldHostname
UPDATE WebSettings SET SettingValue = @newHostname WHERE SettingName = 'JobSchedulerHost'
UPDATE Websites SET ServerName = @newHostname WHERE ServerName = @oldHostname
UPDATE OrionServers SET HostName = @newHostname WHERE HostName = @oldHostname

Login as local admin on the Main Poller server, then run Database Manager, right click the database instance, select New Query.

Since I have access to the database, I checked the values that were stored in the locations in the query. The values were only present in the 'Engines' and 'Websites' tables. Since each table had 2 rows, one with the old hostname and one with the new, Instead of replacing the values in those tables as the query does, I just deleted the rows with the old hostname.

Had the exact same problem 3 times and each time it had a different cause :

1. Transaction Log file was full

2. The additional web server was not getting the correct licence .( had to delete the licence and add it again, reboot the webserver)

3. Different version of .Net on Solarwinds servers.

And the problem is back after the April Windows Patch.

Solution this time : .net 4.7.2 ( NDP472-KB4054530-x86-x64-AllOS-ENU) uninstall and reinstall on all Solarwinds servers using the offline installer .

I faced this issue last week, and found a .net patch(KB4471989) was removed from NMS main polling engine during the windows patch update via WSUS. After re-installing this patch issue got resolved.
