New to Solarwinds

SNMP isn't installed by default on many new Windows installs. WMI will be faster and give you more features for windows. If you still want SNMP the free tool will make short work of it. Also choose a community name that isn't Public if you are starting from the beginning, and set your access IPs to just what you need also.

Add a single node for monitoring

I would start here see below for training and I would also just add one node to see maybe why Orion is not picking up those nodes.

1. Main polling engine IP address and servers IP address should be reachable to each other for only ICMP monitoring

2. For WMI polling, open all the ports, configure admin credentials on the server and use the same on solarwinds

3. For SNMP polling, open port 161, configure community and allow engine IP in IP tables and select the same community on solarwinds

I tried adding the node with the IP and computer name. The test fails.

I will look at the training this morning.

There are 34 of the 56 total nodes were added last night. So now I need help determining why the other nodes are not listed. I did ping a few of those not listed and they are reachable.

I would try to add a single node from the one's that were not added and see why it failed. If it's a network device make sure the community string matches correctly also did you ping the nodes from the Orion server?

I tried adding 5 of the nodes and all of them failed. The nodes I am trying to add are computers.

Yes I can ping all of them from the Orion server.

Could there be a setting on the computers that are not being added that needs to be changed?

What is the error that you get one you try add that single computer? are you doing via WMI or agent?

What are the device types? I think we need to check to make sure that the SNMP communities are readable. Take a look at: Success Center (SNMP Walk tool guide )

For cisco routers routers, maybe look at How to configure snmp on a cisco 2900 switch (post on setting up SNMP on cisco device)

For linux look at: Success Center (Guide on linux snmp config)
And for windows, consider WMI access or Success Center and ( FREE SNMP Enabler for Windows | SolarWinds )

none of the computers have interfaces. Should they? Only the Servers, Switches and printers have Interfaces

When I started my Solarwinds adventure a bit over 2 years ago I had no knowledge of the product. It is a bit of reading and a little bit of trial and error. And also remember to keep things simple.

What is available depends on what the machine returns when polled. I have seen Windows boxes, polled via WMI or agent, that do not show interfaces.

Another place that's a great resource is the customer portal. You can find a link at the top of the Solarwinds home page.

After logging in to the customer portal, go to the Education and Training dropdown menu. They have plenty of videos and even live, instructor lead courses where you can ask questions.

We bought it to see who or what is using up our bandwidth. Are interfaces required to do this?
