configuring the net-snmp agent in Solaris & AIX...

Hi All,

I posted this to the Miscellaneous list; thanks NG for your help in showing me the previous postings on this topic. I've read all of the posts on the subject of configuring net-snmp now and I'll have to say I'm still completely lost & demoralised as I need to make this product work to monitor Solaris 8, 9, and 10, as well as AIX 5.3. What a nightmare!

I managed to get something working on a Solaris 10 server using net-snmp 5.1.4 but I really have no idea what I'm doing, or what I'm trying to do.

At any rate, I'd be most appreciative if someone who has managed to get "net-snmp 5.0.9 to work like a charm" could say what ./configure options they used when compiling it and also tell me the answers to all the searching questions you're asking when you run 'snmpconf -g basic_setup'.

I think I am the man who has said 'this works like a charm' and it does...

As for installation.. I just download the premade 5.09 binary and have never yet had to bother with creating my own (why reinvent the wheel when someone has already done it)...

I have had this working on Sun 2.8/9 boxes for the past 2 years.... also on HP-UX 11i (have no AIX so no comment here)....

May I ask where you obtained a pre-compiled binary for net-snmp-5.0.9 from? I've just checked SunFreeware and they only have versions 5.1.1 and 5.0.7?

Well, I've made the network people happy but our UNIX team certainly won't be relying on this product for the monitoring of our servers. Thanks to the people who replied. Now in case some other poor UNIX *** has to get SolarWinds to monitor Solaris servers (no, there appears to be no AIX support from the net-snmp project). Here's how it's done:

INSTALLING NET-SNMP-5.0.9 FOR SOLARWINDS

Following instructions are based on those found at puzzle.dl.sourceforge.net/.../FAQ.solaris.binaries

1. Download the binaries net-snmp_5.0.9-SunOS_5.8_sun4u.tar.gz from http://www.net-snmp.org/

2. Copy them to /

3. gunzip & untar them

4. Stop the Sun snmp daemon:

a. # /etc/rc3.d/S76snmpdx stop
b. # /etc/rc3.d/S77dmi stop
c. # mv /etc/rc3.d/S76snmpdx /etc/rc3.d/_S76snmpdx
d. # mv /etc/rc3.d/S77dmi /etc/rc3.d/_S77dmi
e. # ps -ef | grep snmpd
f. # kill <PID>

5. # /usr/local/bin/snmpconf -g basic_setup

a. Do you want to configure the information returned in the system MIB group (contact info, etc)? (default = y): <ENTER>
b. The location of the system: <ENTER>
c. The contact information: <ENTER>
d. Do you want to properly set the value of the sysServices.0 OID (if you don't know, just say no)? (default = y): n
e. Do you want to configure the agent's access control? (default = y): <ENTER>
f. Do you want to allow SNMPv3 read-write user based access (default = y): n
g. Do you want to allow SNMPv3 read-only user based access (default = y): n
h. Do you want to allow SNMPv1/v2c read-write community access (default = y): <ENTER>
i. Enter the community name to add read-write access for: private <-- this will vary according to how you've configured SolarWinds
j. The hostname or network address to accept this community name from [RETURN for all]: <ENTER>
k. The OID that this community should be restricted to [RETURN for no-restriction]: <ENTER>
l. Do another rwcommunity line? (default = y): n
m. Do you want to allow SNMPv1/v2c read-only community access (default = y): <ENTER>
n. The community name to add read-only access for: public <-- this will vary according to how you've configured SolarWinds
o. The hostname or network address to accept this community name from [RETURN for all]: <ENTER>
p. The OID that this community should be restricted to [RETURN for no-restriction]: <ENTER>
q. Do another rocommunity line? (default = y): n
r. Do you want to configure where and if the agent will send traps? (default = y): n
s. Do you want to configure the agent's ability to monitor various aspects of your system? (default = y): n
6. # mv snmpd.conf /usr/local/share/snmp/
7. SOLARIS 8/9:
a. # vi /etc/init.d/snmpd

Well, I'm one of the poor Unix schmucks charged with the task of plugging Orion into our Unix and Linux kit.

Alex, I'll definitely be following your instructions for the Solaris 8 config installation. Thanks very much for posting that.

On another issue, I also need to install net-snmp on our Red Hat Linux servers.

We're running AS 4 with kernel 2.6.9-22.0.2.ELsmp. Has anyone out there got this working with Orion?

I am trying to get Orion to monitor an AIX version 5.3 boxes volumes. Has anyone out there had any luck with this?

My system connects up to the AIX box via SNMP. The issue is that when it is monitoring the volumes on the system Orion keep reporting that the volumes have gone down then they come back up.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to get the SNMP agent in AIX Unix to work well with Orion?

I've got this working on 4 RHEL 4AS with 2.6.9-42.0.3.ELsmp kernel with no problems. I just setup a 'rocommunity' with my community name and restarted snmpd.

I would like to add our HP UX systems to Orion, but I cannot find the 5.0.9 version of NET-SNMP. The download link to All Versions on www.net-snmp.org goes to the Sourceforge site and I cannot find v5.0.9. They have v5.0.10 is as far back as it goes. Will this work or does it HAVE to be v5.0.9? If so where can I find a compiled version of this?

Thanks for this info. A couple questions though. Step 3 says to gunzip & untar the binaries. But your instrustions never say when to install them. The link "http://puzzle.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/net-snmp/FAQ.solaris.binaries" is dead now.

Also I get this when I try to run smnpconf:
