SolarWinds - missed market share

Something I would love to have are Solarwinds hardware devices/probes to monitor environment (IE temp, humidity, etc).

If you look on the web you will see a myriad of these devices for sale but in my experience few are worth the money. And even then will they work with your monitoring system the way you want?

For example I have one now that is hokey and I have to depend on it sending trap messages to SolarWinds vs Orion being able to poll it.

So I can without a doubt see great value in devices that not only work well but are custom designed to work with Orion.

I think Solarwinds could grab a lot of market share in this class of devices given your share of the monitoring market.

Not to metnion this is something almost everyone I think could make use of. Which would mean for every sale of Orion you would also possibly have a sale of these probes.

I further propose they should have an equally celestial name. Maybe something like "Corona Probes" or "Solarflare NOC Monitor"

You can get temp/humidity monitoring add-ons for APC UPSes, which can be polled via SNMP rather than the sending of traps. As a bonus, the device & required internet devices would remain up if, for example, the power failed so that the air con stopped which could cause the high temperatures

Of course, as with all networked environmental monitoring stuff, they are quite expensive.

We graph & alert on temperature with our 40kVA APC UPS, and it's been very reliable over the past 5 months or so. I'd imagine that humidity would also work fine.

I've had fantastic success integrating NetBotz equipment into Orion. Even adding a custom HTML resource to include the video feed from the device right into Orion.

Temp and humidity historical charts are easy to setup with the universal device poller as well as radial gauges for current status. You can trigger alarms in the advanced alerting engine based on the UnDP, the SNMP Traps or Syslog messages that come from device. It's really an elegant solution. I'd suggest you take one for a spin.

Yes I realize there are solutions out there that will work. My point was SolarWinds could increase their business if they had their own and give a better value to the customer having the box customized for Orion.

I see your point, but I guess from my view, I'd rather just have SW partner with a few of the vendors out there and fully support their hardware. So perhaps APC and Netbotz partnerships where they introduce a device and SW fully supports it out of the box, without custom pollers, etc. Just point at the device with the correct SNMP string a presto!

No I totally agree with that. And that covers my second point about having devices that will work closely with Orion.

But my second point was that SW could make extra cash if they had their own. Which was basically me trying to hold a carrot out in front in the hopes of solving a problem of mine long term :P

sure they may be able to make a extra buck or two, but at the expense of what? would you like to see them pull resources from orion to build hardware? they are in the monitoring software business which is a different world from the hardware market

Understand the point and this general philosophy aligns with my thoughts for NPM. For example, we moved Wireless monitoring into NPM in 9.5, select a couple vendors and went deep in monitoring them. If you look at the current what we are working on post for NPM, you see we are doing this now for Fiber Channel switches.

I just ran across this integration info between SolarWinds and Opengear. I realize that this isn't product made by SolarWinds but it looks like there is some good integration.
