Hi All

We have many devices that needs to be monitored, but SNMP is not an available options. Those nodes have been created as ICMP, so Solarwinds doesn't know the vendor is Cisco. Without the vendor field, many of alerts, team page, and custom Reports aren't showing these devices. I'm looking for an option to include these devices. Can we manually set the vendor or is the best option to use a Custom Property and add it all places I'm filtering by Cisco?

You are correct that you will need to create and use a custom property to sort things if you cannot use the builtin vendor field. Mucking around in the DB and trying to set the vendor manually is going to give you headaches down the line. You could set up an alert action that sets the custom property with the correct vendor info automatically for any nodes where you do have SNMP/WMI/Agents running and then you would just have to manually set the vendor for your unknown ICMP only nodes.

I don't have examples because I would strongly encourage any client I was working with to enable SNMP, if there are security concerns then use SNMPv3. With only using ICMP you are missing out on so much of what Solarwinds has to offer that I would not want to have to rig up work arounds for all the places it is going to be expecting to have that information.

I do agree with mesverrum try to enable SNMP polling. With icmp you only have the IP Address and maybe the dns Name for the node. You have to find a way to identify the vendor with those 2 infos.

if you can do that set up an alarm that will update your custom property field with the correct vendor. However this is far from the best solution you can get with Solarwinds

I'm no PowerShell expert -- however, it seems like Powershell may be able to automate what you need. PowerShell should be able to login; issue a show version command, or other commands; grab the out put; parse the information; and insert it into the database. Shouldn't it? Anyway, that's what I would look into if I had a lot of ICMP nodes which needed additional information.

On a second note: yes, you can manually insert information into fields populated by SNMP. However, SNMP will write over it if SNMP is enabled in the future for those devices. For that reason some people would feel safer using a custom field.
