New network with Solarwinds

Question

I notice that when you first start to use Solarwinds there is a fair bit of manual work that needs to be done.

For instance, even though you can discover nodes with the discovery manager, you then need to create a new map and drag the nodes onto it.

Then you need to decide what icons to use, add a label, draw and configure the network links etc.

Is this normal?

Seems OK for a static network where everything is fixed but not so sure its much good for a changing network?

One thing that would be really great, in the future after custom MIB support is added :) , is for Orion to not only grab the IPs of interfaces, but also the MAC addresses connected to each Ethernet port.  The Map Maker could then be used to automatically create a network map based upon the gathered MAC and IP topology.  It could be set on a schedule, say once per day or week, to rediscover and reconfigure the map.

There are products out there like this, and we almost purchased one, but our budget got re-evaluated and the cash was invested elsewhere.

Compared to other NM software, Orion is a snap to setup, especially for alerting & reporting.
As for creating maps, that's a manual process that you must stay on top of if your network is constantly changing.
