Dependents

Question

Is the only tool for making dependents, the GUI tool in NPM?  I love this feature but I have 800+ nodes (in networking gear alone) that I would like to create dependencies.  The GUI is time intensive, for that many nodes, and doesnt have a very good editing feature if, for example, I want to simply change the name of the dependency.

Yes.  So for each dependency you click "new", then there is a click to get to the Cisco gear, then a search within the Cisco gear for the parent, then submit, then the same process for finding the child.  That is an awful lot of clicks and time to set up one dependency.  So if you have upwards of 300 routers with roughly 500 switches attached to them it becomes quite time intensive to set up dependencies so that with each down router, I am not getting 4 alerts (1 router, 3 switches).

Does that make sense?  What I was wondering, and think I found my answer to, is if there was a utility like the custom properties utility on the server where I could have more of am efficient way of associating which dependent is associated to which parent.

The other issue is that initially I didnt understand how important the naming scheme would matter to me, and to rename the ones I have already done then I will more or less have to completely reconfig the dependency.
