Advanced Alerts and Applications

I am trying to configure advanced alerts on several applications where I can be notified if the process has stopped or is no longer running. Here is what I have done so far:

1. created alert to monitor notepad.exe
2. Trigger condition set to monitor, server, application name is equal to notepad.exe. I have tried this with process name also
3. Application status is equal to down, i have also tried running copies is equal to none.

I do not get any alerts, i have opened multiple notepad.exe and closed and I do not get an alert generated. I receive all my other alerts, and smtp is working fine. I also tried messenger service, no good.

Welcome to my hell... If you’re really having the exact same problem as me you'll find that it works on some days, but not for others. I haven't been able to find a reason why but when it works, it works great, and when it doesn't there is no reason why that I can find but it eventually starts working again. If you manage to figure it out please let me know. It's been driving me NUTS

Just looked at the alerting engine and it is not running, nor will it start. Any ideas?? Thanks

Do you have .Net Framework 2.0 installed? That version of the framework is required for the service to run, and a number of users have had problems because they still have version 1.1.

Is that to say you should uninstall .NET Framework 1.1 if it is installed? You should be able to have both 1.1 and 2.0 installed on the same machine but could this explain some of my problems? I have both 1.1 and 2.0 of the .NET Framework installed on my Orion server currently.

Having .Net 1.1 and .Net 2.0 will not cause a problem.

Does your Orion server have a connection to the internet?

Do your other services start? --e.g., Syslog, Trap

Do you see anything in the Application Event Log or the SolarWinds event log regarding the service crashing?

Denny,

I too am having problems with services not starting and I have .Net Framework 2.0 installed.

The Alerting, Syslog, and Trap services error out with error 1053.

Any thoughts. Orion works and application monitor does too.

Does your Orion server have a connection to the internet? If not, that is probably the source of your problem.

The services need to contact thawte.com to verify the certificate that the services were signed with.

If you can't access the internet from your Orion service, you can add thawte.com to your hosts file and redirect it to your loopback address (127.0.0.1), which will allow the services to start.

We recognize that changing your hosts file is not a good long-term solution. We will be fixing this.

Yes it does. I even did a new install on a newly installed server and it still does not work, yes I added the host file entry.

Disabling Netbios over TCP has fixed this, I hope.

All of my services start just fine, as I stated above I have .NET Framework 2.0 installed and my server has access to the internet.

I added the host file entries just to see if that helped and it did not. What I am experiencing is that the Advanced Alerting Engine works when it wants. Some days it works GREAT and others it doesn't work at all. This has NOTHING to do with alert "trigger actions" as I do not have any defined since rebuilding my alert rules, a task that took me 14 hours and made no difference. Solarwinds see the node, interface or application down, but the Alerting engine doesn't seem to have any clue that this has happened. This would be a problem with the alert "trigger conditions". One day it works, the next it doesn't. The only thing I see in my eventviewer related to the alerting engine is..

any progress on duplicating Exception in MainTask Loop event log entry and the resolution? does disabling Netbios over TCP resolve the issue?

You're posting on an old thread that's referencing
8.0. We made a lot of changes for 8.5- Which version are you using?
If you are seeing this error with 8.5 I'd encourage you to open a Support ticket on your issue that we can collects
logs and diagnostics on your specific problem.
