Network Performance Monitor (NPM)
Discover Switch Links
FormerMember
Hi,
I am currently discovering my network. SolarWinds has successfully found my RedHat servers (running SNMP) and Cisco Catalyst switches.
However SolarWinds does not appear to understand that the switches are connected to the servers.
There are two things I want to be able to do:
1. Automatically create maps of a datacentre which show the servers linked to the switch. I dont want to link the switch and the servers manually
2. If a switch goes down (for example power is cut to the switch) then I don't want SolarWinds to alert about every single application on the servers; it should only alert to say the switch is down and perhaps list the affected servers.
Can someone tell me if SolarWinds is capable of this functionality?
Thanks in advance,
John

I'll help answer #2 on your list.
When configuring alerts look at the 'Alert Suppression' tab.
Example:
We have a router with a layer 3 switch connected to it. We then have 20 switches connected to that layer 3 switch. I've set up an alert suppression to not fire off the alerts of the 20 switches if the router goes down.
