Creating Sub folders or Child Folders of a Group

Hi All,

I am new to Solarwinds and I have been given the task to create a group to place devices based on their location and their environment.

I have created the first Main Group via the Group management. In that Main group I would like to create the sub group/child as the region then I can add the devices in that location that satisfies the groups.

I am unable to see that option in creating the child group.

Can someone please help?

It's not super-obvious from jump, but the way that you do this is to select your "parent" group and then create a group.

You'll know you are doing it right because you'll see this "warning."

i would also make sure you create these as dynamic queries...

that way when a new node is created the child will be added automatically to the parent group...

so below i am calling out custom objects from the node to filter out by city and by access controls

this alleviates the maintaining aspect

ahamlet - I'm calling your attention to this as well. The best way (in my opinion) is to use custom properties for the site, building, location, whatever, and have a group dynamically built from that custom property., Custom properties are the not-so-hidden superpower of the Orion platform.

Hi KMSigma , can you suggest some script to do these task using sdk.

Actually mesverrum has published several of them in his personal GitHub repository. Most of them are built off of the framework provided by Group.PS1 that is in the SolarWinds SDK GitHub repository. His comments are pretty good and you should be able to follow along without too much difficulty.

If you have more questions about leveraging the API and SDK, then I'd recommend following the Orion SDK forum on THWACK and asking questions there.
