Syslog pattern match

I have a trial version of syslog and am trying to test the pattern match feature but cannot get it to work.
What I want to do is serach a syslog message for 'respond' I have tried entering just respond in the pattern message match and it does not pick the messages up.
Any idea's what I need to do?
