Some NPM (10.1.1) services fail to start now..

Hi All,

I'm having a problem that started this morning (few hours ago) whereby there was no data available on the orion web page after a certain time. I checked the 'polling engines' section under 'admin' and I get 'Polling Engine Active' but above it it reads: "Last Database Update 146 minutes 13 seconds ago"

Looking at the Windows 2008 services, the SW Collector Data Processor & Collector Polling Controller services have both terminated unexpectedly. I spoke with the tech that was doing some work on the server and around the time this happen he had just installed NCM 6.1 (seperate DB though, not combined or linked).

I just wondered if anyone had any initial ideas.. I understand more information may need to be provided..

he has now uninstalled NCM and we've rebooted the box and run the configuration wizard for NPM to re-install the services/database link/web site but no change - it comes back clean but then the services stop a few seconds later.

Hi,

I have tried the steps mentioned above but it didnt work.However, I managed to fix this issue by first renaming the PollingController to PollingController_OLD, then I uninstalled the Polling Controller via the setup in Installer folder, and installed it again.

After a reboot, the system came back online without any issue.

Hope this helps anyone else having the same issue.

This is mostly caused by corrupted SDF file ( SqlCE database). If you can see in DataProcessor.log or PollingController.log exception about not able to deserialize SqlCe..... . Than this is it.

Please replace PollingController.sdf located in ...\Documents And Settings\All Users\Application Data\SolarWinds\Collector\Data

here copy PollingController-Blank.sdf to PollingController.sdf and remove readOnly attribute. Before you do that stop all services via Orion Service Manager.

FYI, I had a similar problem where the SW Collector Data Processor and Collector Polling Controller would not start. There was no data being collected for the "Average Response Time and Packet Loss" or for Disk Volumes. This was on Windows 2008 R2 so the files were in a different place. I renamed c:\ProgramData\SolarWinds\Collector\Data\PollingController.sdf to PollingController-OLD.sdf, then copied PollingController-Blank.sdf to PollingController.sdf. Then I was able to start the services and it began collecting data.
