SNMP node "test failed" Cannot past test and choose next - still tries and fails on valid community strings

Greetings,

I migrated successfully from a 9.5 NPM to 10 NPM and have been running fine.

Tried to add new customer equipment to the NPM software and the test fails on read/write community strings.

Understand that on the same server, I have snmpwalker from solarwinds as well and it can connect successfully to the same customer nodes with both public and private community strings for SNMPv2.

I can even "re-test" existing SNMP nodes and it "succeeds".

I have turned off the firewall completely on the server, turns off automatic firewall rules on the router for this connection.....no joy.

So how it is two SolarWinds products both running on same server talking SNMPv2 to same node on customer network, traversing same firewalls and VPN tunnels - snmpwalk succeeds on both public and private strings, but the Orion cannot?

This is driving me nuts. Help!!!

List Resources on a node checks if the node is up using before proceeding, It expects the ICMP reply comes from the address pinged.

Can you ping the customer node from your orion server? Does the ICMP reply packet come from the address you're pinging?

On the affected Polling Engine Check that it ignores the return address on the ICMP ping packet:

Go to file %ProgramFiles(x86)%\SolarWinds\Orion\SolarWinds.Orion.Discovery.Job.dll.config

And change the line

<add key="SkipNodesWhenIcmpReturnedFromAnotherAddress" value="1"/>

to

<add key="SkipNodesWhenIcmpReturnedFromAnotherAddress" value="0"/>

I changed the line as suggested but it made no difference. "Node does not respond with the supplied read/write community string".

I can ping the device just fine. As I said - SNMPWalk works fine.

I have seen in forums that this problem was described in version 9.5. Looks like the bug is still there.

I would verify that the Solarwinds Trap Service is running and the standard SNMP Trap service is disabled.

What type of device is this? I experienced similar issues with a Netscreen firewall.

MS SNMP Trap service is disabled already.

Odd. I don't recall that I was ever able to resolve my issue and it just seemed to start working after an upgrade of either the firmware of my device or a new Orion version. I had the exact same symptoms - snmpwalk from Orion server was fine, as was ping, and querying using the SNMP MIB Browser, but Orion just didn't want to work. If you have Wireshark installed on your Orion server, can you start it up and see if you can tell if the device is responding with anything when you attempt to poll it via SNMP with Orion?

When I have run across this issue I have removed the SNMP username in the Read/Write section and was able to continue. This was for SNMPv3 so I'm not sure if this will help. Maybe try removing the Community String but populate the Read/Write string.

Nope. It requires the strings to be filled and I cannot skip processes via "Next" - clicking Next produces popup which says community string is wrong...even though I can get results with other programs. SNMPWalk also works with both "public" and "private" community strings.

I used TCPDump on the main router and I see one message coming from the server. Reminds me to enable dropped packet logging and see if its sending malformed packets.

Update: by changing node to unmanaged, then changing its config to snmp with public/private strings, then re-managing the nodes - I get the snmp updates for the nodes.

So there is a service that is picking up the return oid packets and updating the database, but for some reason as yet unknown - whatever is responsible for "recognizing" that it got the information during test is not working.

Update to this post. Unmanaged Nodes, Change from ICPM to SNMP with public/private strings, ReManage, query. Couple minutes later SNMP data is coming in and I have visibility to equipment.
