Microsoft Licenses Required to run NPM

We are in the process of rolling out NPM to our production environment. We don’t use Windows Server or SQL, so I need to purchase licenses for both of these products and I need a little assistance understanding the Microsoft licensing portion.

Will Windows Server 2012 Essentials work for the webserver/poller computer or do I need Server 2012 Standard?

For SQL, the cheapest option looks to be the Microsoft 2012 SQL Standard with 5 CAL licenses? Will this work if the webserver/poller computer is the only computer using this SQL database? Our server has 8 cores so the CAL licensing seems cheaper.
