Extracting the most out of my devices - PacketShaper, Juniper SSG, NetApps, etc.

New to Orion NPM here. Am trying to figure out Universal Device Poller, and am having some trouble - I've watched the howto video. I think I just need a bit of experience with it.

So I've got Juniper Firewalls, PacketShapers, NetApp's, etc. that I'd like to be able to drill into with more than I have today (I just set the community string, added it to Orion and went with the defaults of what it gave me - minimal stuff).

For the Juniper's for example, I'd like to get throughput per VPN tunnel, VPN tunnel usage/status, session counts, tunnel/physical interface statistics, and the like.

For the NetApp's, I'd like to see disk space for my aggregates, volumes, LUNs, snapshots yada yada.

etc.

Can anyone direct me on where to go to get started? I haven't been successful on extracting or setting up pollers for eithers of these - Juniper's or NetApps specifically.

Maybe there are some online tutorials elsewhere, or...?

One place to start would be the Content Exchange page. Other users post content like UnDPs, custom reports, etc. that they have created and are using in their environments. It looks like Brian Duvall has posted some Universal Device Pollers for Juniper Netscreens and VPN Tunnels.

Hope this gives you a good place to start.

With the latest versions of Orion is actually become very easy to add devices that are not directly supported (Like most Cisco devices, Windows servers etc..)

The first thing you need is to find the MIBs for the device type you wish to monitor - for Junos and ScreenOS devices they can be found on the Juniper website under support.

Next you'll need a MIB browser like http://tl1.ireasoning.com/mibbrowser.shtml

You load the MIB's into the MIB browser and look for the data (OID) you want to poll (This is by far the most troublesome part of the entire process)

When you've found the OIDs you wish to poll create universal devices pollers for these OID's and assign them to your devices

Thanks. I have SolarWinds Engineer's Toolset, so I can only assume that their MIB Browser will work in a similar fashion?

I have in the past found OID's, but have had trouble with the process of creating a pollar for them - maybe I'm not clear on the process of getting them into the main MIB database that the UdP uses or something. I'll try again - I must be doing something wrong.

One question about this - I've got SOlarWinds MIB Browser, and I downloaded all the enterprise *.MIB files for ScreenOS 5.4. But I don't see anywhere in the MIB Browser to "Open" the files to read them, or Import them into my current known database on my Orion server. What am I missing? Don't they need to be added/imported into my Orion MIB database to be known to my system? And if so, how do I open them in the MIB browser? All I see is an "Import *.MIBX File from SolarWinds" option (?).

Orion doesnt need the MIB files - the MIB files are simply a way to document what data each OID contains.

Once you have a OID simply enter it into the universal device poller to create a poller for the values in that OID.

About opening MIB's in the Toolset - sorry I have no idea - try the free download of the MIB browser I suggestet - it doesnt need to be installed prior to using it - just download and launch (requires java).

One example of a poller would be for the number of Active session on a screenOS box - The OID for this is 1.3.6.1.4.1.3224.16.3.2
