Average bps in DB

Question

Hi There,

Im trying to understand the In_Averagebps and Out_averagebps values in the InterfacesTraffic table. And how these values are derived.

Our poller runs every 9 mins. Are these averages "the average of the total traffic through the interface in the poller interval (9 minutes)"?

Average between the Min and Max Bps?

If this is the case where (what part of the MIB) does Orion query to retireve these values?

Thanks Tim,

I didnt realise "InterfaceTraffic" was a view! (I dont have direct access to the SQL Server).

It also appears that the routine that rolls up the detail\hourly\daily has stopped working (Its configured and enabled but we have entries in the detail table going back over a month).

You should have three InterfaceTraffic tables: _Detail, _Hourly, and _Daily. There's also an InterfaceTraffic view that is the union of these three tables. Is that what you have?

I've been looking a writing a report that collects information directly from the "InterfacesTraffic" table to produce a report that show the number of times that an interface has exceed a certain threshold in a certain time period. The InterfacesTraffic table seems to store values every 9 minutes for each interface for at least 30 days. These values include In_averagebps and Out_averagebps. How are these values calculated? Its doesnt look they are rolled into Hourly\Daily etc.

If i do a count in SQL for all rows for a single interfaceid in a 30 day period i get  4800 rows - (60x24x30)/9 this seems to indicate that these value are not rolled up - there is a unique value at each poll interval.

Presumably these vlaues take the last ifinoctects and the current inifoctects subtract the old value from the new value and divide by 540 (9 minute polling period in seconds).?

Whats important for me is that the averagebps figure is obtained from traffic throughput in the poll interval and NOT by taking the average of min\max bps.
