Moving NCM onto a VM box

I'm looking at moving my NCM application and database over to a VM box to help with performance. I currently have 1500 devices with polling enabled and weekly invintory updates.

I'm running 8.3 with a MS SQL backend.

Does anybody know what kind of resources I should look at allocating for this VM instance?

There have been quite a few performance improvements since v5.0. The current version is 5.5.1 so I would recommend upgrading.

Having said that, moving NCM to its own VM (with appropriate CPU/memory allocated) would certainly also help with performance.

Moving to a VM won't enhance performance from our experience. A beefier physical server will be your best bet.

Currently NCM is running on a box with Whats Up Gold and the performance is terrible. Whats Up Gold runs fine with no problems but for some reason NCM takes approx 3 to 5 sec before mouse clicks on the GUI to respond. We also have Orion NPM running on a seperate box that works just fine.

Would moving NCM to a VM Box increase it's performance over it's current location? If not we'll just leave it where it is and deal with it because we don't currently have the budget for a new physical server.

Also, if anybody has suggestions on how to make the current setup run better i'm all ears.

I am also getting this error in my Event Logs

There was an error updating the Engine Keep alive record

Error Detail-Invalid column name 'IP'.

Invalid column name 'SysLogKeepAlive'.

Invalid column name 'WindowsVersion'.

Invalid column name 'ServicePack'

What version of NCM are you running? Also, can you try disabling node monitoring in the NCM Win32 interface to see if that helps (File > Settings > Node Monitoring)?

I have already turned off Node Monitoring and that helped a little bit, but still not to the level I would like.

We're running V5.0 at the moment. If there is a newer version that would address these slowness issues, i'd be willing to look at that option as well.
