How do I use NCM to alert me when a windows service stops?

Hi Thwack,

I'm a SolarWinds NCM newbie and my NCM specialist is away on vacation.

How do I use NCM to alert me when a windows service stops? My NCM is already configured to do this for other windows services on other machines, but I need to add one monitored service to this machine.

Since the target machine and this overall process is already configured in my NCM, I'm hoping someone can tell me the component names and/or search criteria I can use to find info in the help, manuals and Google.

As Jiri mentioned, the Home tab is present for all module. NCM is found primarily under the Configs tab, but it does not sound like this is what you need. NCM is used primarily to manage configurations for network devices (backing up startup and running configs on switches, for example). Based on your question, it sounds like you need SAM, as Jiri also mentioned. You can get into the workings of SAM in several ways. If you have the Settings menu option available (in the far upper right near your logon name and the Help link), you can click on that to go into the Settings for the entire console. If this opens up for you, you will see a Settings box in the Website Administration menu, and there will be a "SAM Settings" option. Clicking on this will take you to the area where you would do all tasks related to SAM.

Depending on how your environment is set up, you may also be able to access this option from teh SAM Application Summary screen, if you have the icon for "SAM Settings" available. It would be in the white area, just above the date and time in the middle right. Another method to get into it would be the "Manage Applications" which is on the right side of the All Applications box in the bottom left of your screenshot.

Whichever way you get to settings, once you are in the SAM Settings screen, you will see a box, upper left by default, called Getting Started with SAM. This is where you would start the process for adding a monitor.

Are you sure you are talking about NCM?

Service monitoring is typically performed by SAM.

Hi Jiri,

This is the 'home' screen from NCM. I can find my target Windows machine listed, but I can't figure out how to monitor one service and if/when it stops, have the system email me...

That helps a lot.

Actually, the 'Home' tab is common for all the modules you have -- application management, virtualization management, and configuration management.

Move the mouse over the Applications tab and choose one of the menu items -- probably SAM Summary or Windows.

Thanks Jiri!

I went to the Applications tab, the 'SAM Summary' sub-tab and the All Applications section where I can scroll to the bottom, expand the 'Windows Services' option to see Image-1 below. I think I have to build a new monitor for "Server-2" which is nearly identical for the 'Server-1' images below, but to monitor a different Windows service.
