Clearing Interface Counters

Hi,

I would like to create a script which would allow me to automate the clearing the traffic counters on some Cisco 3560x series switches. From searching the forum, I see that there are others which have suggested using the following commands to perform this task:

clear counters ${CRLF}

${CRLF}

My question would be, which location within the NCM would I be executing these commands? Would I need to create a new Config Change Templates? (Attached)

gsmann Glad to hear you got the first part working. As for the next problem, it shouldn't be much trouble at all. NCM allows the use of NCM/Orion variables, so you should be able to easily pass the node name through the command.

Here is an example I have used to update the SNMP Location field, via NCM, reading the value of the custom property "TerminationAddress".

configure terminal
snmp-server location ${TerminationAddress}
end
copy run start

Try to run the script again, using ${Caption} to read the name of the node and put it into the filename.

sh interfaces counters | redirect t10.x.x.x/Counters_${Caption}.csv

gsmann You could create job within NCM (/Orion/NCM/Resources/Jobs/JobsList.aspx) to run the script, either on all NCM devices, or simply a subset of devices. The job can then be scheduled on a regular basis, or you could just let it sit there, and run it on demand when needed.

You could also save the script, and run it via the "Configuration Management" page. (/Orion/NCM/ConfigurationManagement.aspx)

Hi Will,

When I attempt to execute the commands via the Configuration Management page on one of my switches, it simply displays an "In Progress" status for several minutes but does not actually clear the counters. I suspect this might be because I am using an a different credential set to sign into my switches to run the command via the command line. What syntax would be required to specify different login credentials set to the script before I run it? Sorry, do not have much experience with scripting!I

gsmann Executing a script will use the credentials in the "Connection Profile" section of the node configuration.

When setting up your device(s) to be managed by NCM, you will need to assign the appropriate credentials, via a "Global Connection Profile". You can have many profiles saved on the system, however, as far as I know, you can only assign a single profile to each node. So, make sure the credentials assigned will allow NCM to accomplish the various tasks you need to run on the device(s).

In regards to the syntax of the script, I have always done a simple copy/paste (from my notes to the script box), and ran the script without issue(s). While some devices may require you to add "${CRLF}", I have not yet encountered such a device, so I cannot offer any useful suggestions. Your script, when being executed by NCM, should be exactly what you would enter yourself, via CLI. So, if you are logging into the device, then typing the command "clear counters", and pressing enter to run the command, you should be able to do the exact same thing on the script box. Just type in your command, press enter, then you can submit/execute your script. However, if you have to log into the box, then do something like "config term" to get into a config prompt, then you will either need to adjust the script to include that line prior to the command you wish to run, or you will need to check the "Execute Script In Config Mode" box at the bottom of the script box.

Thanks Will, looks like that works! Now what I'm trying to do is list the current counters on a switch, and export the results that to a csv file on my tftp server. The script that I'm using is the following:

sh interfaces counters | redirect tftp://10.x.x.x/Counters.csv

This seems to work when I execute the command on an individual switch, but not for multiple switches, as it only creates one csv file, with the results of one switch. Would there be a way to run this script against multiple switches, which produces multiple output files?
