We're testing out a trial version of Orion NCM and we started by doing a discovery on a subnet on our network. NCM discovered a bunch of our Cisco devices, but only identified about half of them as Cisco router/switches. For example, after the devices have been added to NCM and we check the Device Details, the Vendor field shows as Cisco and the Machine Type field shows as a Cisco Catalyst 295012-G. But for the rest of the devices we have to try to identify them by IP address, which is obviously more difficult and it's likely we'll miss some of the devices.
So what determines whether or not a NCM can identify a device by Vendor and Machine Type? Is is an SNMP setting on the router or switch?
