Orion NCM eval/software cannot install on Vista

I have been unsuccessfully trying to install the evaluation version of NCM on my monitoring station - Vista Enterprise x64. As we are a smaller shop we run all monitoring off a dedicated workstation.

When installing the SQL Server components install without issue. However, the next step I receive the following warning message:

“SolarWinds Orion Network Configuration Manager v5.5.1 EVAL requires that your computer is running Windows XP or Windows Server 2003 or Windows Server 2008.”

Selecting OK then takes me to the ‘InstallShield Wizard Completed’ screen and the following note:

“The wizard was interrupted before SolarWinds Orion Network Configuration Manger v5.5.1 EVAL could be completely installed. Your system has not been modified. To complete installation at another time, please run setup again.”

As it says it runs on XP my assumption was that it would work on Vista, like the Engineer's Toolset does. How do I get this to work?

Currently, NCM evals are only supported on Windows XP, 2003, and 2008.

That makes evaluating the software a harder thing to do. In order to actually evaluate the software I have to purchase a Windows Server license, or find a machine that I can install Windows XP on. Makes it harder for the smaller shops like ours to benefit from applications like NCM.

We hear you. We're working on adding eval support for Vista and Windows 7. However, it's worth noting that a server OS is highly recommended for production roll out, so it might make sense to setup a Windows server for testing purposes anyway.

Due to costing it is cheaper for our shop to run our monitoring tools on a desktop OS. This is where we run Engineer's Toolset from, specifically the Network Performance monitor and Syslog server.

This is also where we would like to be running the NCM from. Other tools like WinAgents HyperConf allow for it, and the assumption was that SolarWinds could - like it allows with the Engineer's Toolset.
