How to edit the vendor without using SNMP

Question

We've got a problem where certain VMWare vmxnet3 adapters generate a MAC address with a prefix belonging to a different vendor (in our case "Novell, INC". All of these address are being polled straight off dns/dhcp and SNMP is not in use for the subnet.

Is there a way to make the vendor field editable without configuring SNMP for it?

You can also edit the MacPrefixes table, but everytime you run configuration wizard, it will wipe the entry.
