Does ORION 8 poll serially or parrallel?
FormerMember
I am trying to figure out what the real world scalability is with an orion 8 server. If i want to poll 3000 servers and collect 35 OID counters from each server and have 5 min intervals, will orion blow up?
I am trying to figure out if ORION polls each device sequentially or does it do all of them at once or in batches, etc? Any detailed info on this would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
J

I am not sure if I asked this question wrong or maybe just nobody knows. If someone could steer me in the right direction that would be super helpful.. Thanks all,

You have two options to help scale as well. First, there's an add-on called 'Polls Per Second Tuning' that will help adjust your server to exactly many threads need to be used for the amount of interfaces/nodes you have. It even suggests optimal settings for you. Second, you can always add additional polling engines if you end up scaling to a huge number. For the most part though, my poller has never caused me concern (my IPS unit hates it, but i'm okay with that). Its the website and the NetFlow collector that seems to chew up our procs.
To answer the direct question though, it polls in parallel. You can see this by looking at the Polling Status under the file menu in the Performance monitor app. It will show how many polls are still out and how far along you are in a polling cycle.
