Poller with Dual IP's

Question

Basic situation we have is that we're retiring a customer's HPOV and folding them into our NPM set (and there was much rejoicing at SW's). The issue is that they have 250+ sites with thousands of servers/network gear that all point to this old IP address for traps but also receive polls from. While I know that NPM will receive Syslog and Traps on the secondary IP, the polling is the question. Is there any way to have polls for a specific set of nodes source from the secondary IP? The IP is on the same subnet so dual gateway's aren't an issue...

Do you have another nic in the poller? If so, can you put the OV address on the second nic and use static, persistent routes on the server to point to the devices previously monitored by OV? Wouldn't that source from the desired interface? With them being on the same subnet, I'm not sure if Windows will let you configure two nics with addresses from the same subnet (I ain't no Windows guy), and it also depends on whether the addresses for the devices in question can be easily delineated from others with your route statements.

I'm really just thinking outloud...

Since the addresses are on the same subnet (with the same gateway), what happens if you configure your route statement to point to the address of the second nic? Will it let you do that? Will that in a sense source from that interface?

I've never really played around with routes on a Windows box, so I'm not sure how it would behave, or if you can "trick" it. Or, maybe I'm having a brain fart... :)

You could do some fancy NATing on the Gateway router used by Orion.

Add the old HPOV IP as a NAT address on this router.

Then create a list of source IPs (systems) that will be sending to this IP and NAT them to the Orion primary IP.

You would also have to NAT these systems as destination IPs from the NAT address on the router, to poll them with SNMP.

This is not a clean solution and definitely a last resort solution.
It is not recommended and I highly discourage it.
But it a possibility......

I guess I should have mentioned we have two pollers that are replacing the two HPOV's, each already in production covering 1200 nodes 80/20. Unfortunately we don't manage the network devices, we just monitor so NCM is out. We did look at pushing the change via GPO though with 30-40 domains that don't have full trusts setup between them poses an issue.
