MSDE has 2Gb Limit - Need Help configuring new DB
FormerMember
Pardon being verbose but I wanted to be clear:
PROBLEM:
I'm running Orion NPM on Windows 2000 using MSDE.
The database being used is called "NetPerfMon2" and it is currently full (SolarWinds Database Manager - right-click database name and choose 'database details' says free space 0 bytes) -
As a consequence, the MSDE SQL Errorlog (C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\Mssql\DataMSSQL$SOLARWINDS\LOG\ERRORLOG ) is constantlty being written to with a message to the effect that the db has reached its 2Gb limit.
Once this log fills up, it consumes all the disk space on the partition).
I want to either empty that database of it's records or better still, start using a new database.
I can't see how to do this - please can someone help?
Thanks,
Daren

You need to upgrade to SQL.

Run through the configuration wizard again (only the database part should be required actually).
During the wizard you should be able to create a new database.

Actually...this would wipe all your nodes...etc. from the database. The only other thing I could think of is to write a script to empty all the tables and reset the auto ID fields back to 1 but that would probably be a lot of work.

Have you tried to compact and repair the DB?
You can upgrade to Microsoft SQL Express 2005 which has a 4GB limit and is free.
In Solarwinds Orion, the Database Manager allows you to do a backup and restore.
- Back up the MSDE database into a temp directory
- Restore the backup into SQL Express 2005
- Run the Solarwinds Configuration Wizard and reconnect Orion to the new database.

Thanks guys - I invoked the configuration wizard by executing the install file (i.e. reinstall NPM). This in turn started the config wizard and enabled me to create a new database.
I also take your point about SQL!
Thanks again,

Thanks also for advice about SQL Express 2005 - I imagine I can just install it over the existing SQL server. I'll read the notes on M*crosoft.com
Many thanks,

Thanks for update to post Mithrilhall.
I created a new database (as you say, empty of nodes but that's okay).
I then started a new Network Discovery, and was given the option to open an old 'discovery database', which I did.
I then continued with the discovery to find all the new network nodes that have been deployed (since last discovery) they were found and I THINK (I'm still importing devices) they were added to the newly created database.
Thanks again and fingers crossed.
