Here's a short description of each of the 3 management packs that are getting close to release:

Wireless Networks - used for monitoring Wireless Access Points (WAPs) and the clients connected to them. Will give you stats like signal strenth, signal quality, connected clients, client online times, client traffic, and etc... Includes monitoring capabilities for all 802.11 compatiable WAPs and additional capabilities for Cisco and Avaya APs with more coming down the road.

Application Monitor - monitor application/process running on Windows and/or Unix servers to tell you when a service is running/stopped, how much CPU it is consuming, and how much memory it has allocated. This application monitors the process via SNMP by reading the running processes table on the machine.

Network Services - monitor network services/applications like HTTP, SNMP, DNS, SQL, etc. by opening the port and/or running a test transaction.

Wireless Networks and Application Monitor will release first with Network Services following soon thereafter.

Apparently the Wireless Networks app was in full display all over Microsoft's TechEd conference in Orlando Florida last week!

My work mate just got back and mentioned the huge proliferation of 42" Plasma screens showing the state of the WiFi networks at all the various buildings in the Campus, using the Solarwinds Map-maker display. Sounds like it was a very well run event.

Just a head-up. Looks like the Cisco 1200 WAPs with G radios don't report signal quality for wireless clients. This is odd as the WAPs with B radios do and the other vendors' WAPs that we've tested do.

If any of you are using these WAPs and want to monitor client signal quality you might consider opening a case with the Cisco TAC to see if there is a known IOS bug surrounding this issue. If you need any help from SolarWinds I'll be glad to offer my assistance.

It would seem that AireSpace (recently acquired by Cisco) equipment is not supported by the Solarwinds Wireless Network pack. It comes up listed as an unsupported device.

Hi there. Applications Monitoring works great.

However I'm facing problems with the Wireless Management Module

It doesn't seem to collect any statistics especially the number of Clients connected per AP.

I'm using the Cisco Aironet 350 series AP. Orion is able to detect these APs via SNMP as per normal.

The only problem I face is that the Wireless Management Module does not return and statiscal values at all.

Hope anyone can help me on this. Thanks

Hello all,

I have 7.8 installed with the Application Monitor and Wireless management packs. I must say the the kids at SW have been busy. The features of the 7.8 upgrade are significant both on the back end performance and the front end web interface.

Monitoring processes on the Windows boxes and being able to alert on their status is huge for us.

The wireless package has everything we have been looking for in terms of monitoring our APs and clients. Kudos to the coders at SW.

However, we still are waiting for custom mib support. Josh, can you please tell us if this is in the works.

Just this week we installed some Cisco 1231G APs running 12.3.4-JA which is the latest release and signal quality does not work with it either. I haven't contacted TAC yet though as mentioned. Everything else seems pretty cool and working.

One big thing missing I see is rogue detection. Cisco has a package that includes the capabilities of rogue detection, but is over $5K, yikes. Not sure what all it does, just heard about it.

Anyone know if rogue detection is in the works?

The Wireless Networks and Application Monitor Management Packs have now officially released and the pricing and details are on the SolarWinds.Net website. In a nutshell, $1,495 for the Application Monitor and $2,495 for the Wireless Networks. We're looking into adding some rogue detection capabilities but I don't have anything firm on this yet.

On the Custom MIB support, you bet we're working on it. We've made quite a bit of progress on this already this year and we're continuing to get closer and closer to having this capability available. There will be a couple of interim steps along the way to getting here. First, you'll see a new Alert engine for Orion release. This new alert engine is more SQL based and will allow for more complex alerts. This engine will be needed for both the Custom MIBs and the Wireless Networks, Application Monitor, and Network Services Management Packs.

With regards to Custom MIBs, I'm wondering which MIBs that people are most interested in monitoring. Which ones are you interested in?

Hi Josh,

Temperature & Voltage MIBs for our remote locations would be great.
I suspect our Cisco equipment is rebooting due to overheating.
I'd like to be able to run a monthly report on the cause of reboots at these sites.
Power outage or overheating?

Netflow data would also be a valuable MIB, as well as Cisco SAA info.

Without knowing to much on if the data is availeble using SNMP I would love to get Stats on Pix VPN tunnels (both LAN-LAN & PPTP/IPSEC client connections).

Compaq/HP extensions (CPU heat, disksubsystem/Array status) would also be a nice thing to see in nodeview.

Thanks for the heads up on the custom MIBs. You are my hero.

We would like to see:
Cisco NetFlow
Support for environmental conditions (temp, voltage, fan, power supply, etc...)
Cisco VPN monitoring (site to site and remote user) tunnels and security parameters
Support for major server vendors (HP, Dell, Sun, IBM) to see array controllers and other proprietary goo

just been playing with the App Mon tool... this is a good start but I will be waiting for the next few releases before buying..

IMHO it is missing some key items

1 - full integration into the web interface
2 - no ability for notifications in event of service failure
3 - no ability to create reports in the usual Orion way
4 - no ability to create custom monitors (i.e. tcp/ip ports or web pages).

At the moment I use Whatsup Pro to do the above running on top of my Orion instance... I very much prefer the Orion tool and once the above items are convered I will move 100% in this direction.

We're missing CPU/Memory usage from all our HP Procurve 8000 switches and Fortigate 800 firewalls.

I Agree with Martin on the above. Having the ability to report the application as an "alert" instead of as an "event" will be a real godsend.

Could we make this a configurable option in the next version please?

Do you mean, sent an alert if one of the NPM services stop responding ?
Or... send an alert if some other managed service fails ?

We did get the application alerting and it seems to work just fine; but not having the ability to alert someone that a service is down is a pretty big negative. At this point is is pretty much just for logging if an application goes up or down.

We use Liebert Enclosures with Environmental Units built in. It would be great if my Sitenet integrators were supported fully in orion. This way I could see temp/humd and what the status of outlets on the load control modules.

But its great to see that the wireless pack is now realized. It makes orion much more usefull to me now.

Custom MIB support for Dell products would be a godsend. We're a 100% Dell shop (I expect there are a few others out there).

I'm looking for PowerEdge and PowerConnect (servers and switches) support on temperature, voltage, the sort of thing OpenManage now reports but coming in through Orion instead. Too d*mn many tools required to manage things! I still would need some of these other tools for "drill down" looks, but if Orion can give me a good "5,000 foot" view of the network health, that would be perfect.
