Network Performance Monitor (NPM)
ipMonitor

A lot of the features I was hoping to see in version 8's later releases are addressed in the newly acquired ipMonitor.
Does this mean we won't be seeing the port/protocol monitoring we have been waiting for introduced into Orion?
I am reluctant about buying ipMonitor when it is described as a "network monitor for applications and infrastructure". I have already bought a product for monitoring the infrastructure (Orion), and have resisted buying another product to monitor network applications on the understanding that this would be part of Orion. Solarwinds' answer now appears to be similar to everyone elses answer: everyone else says 'buy another application'; Solarwinds say 'buy another application...from us'.

I would also like to know the answer to this question. Anyone from SolarWinds have an answer?

My guess is that they'll combine ipMonitor with the Application Monitoring addon for Orion; of course this will be a separate fee as it is now.

While I cant speak to the long-term plans for integrating the products, I can say that we will always have a stand-alone ipMonitor product available to SolarWinds customers. We are working on an upgrade path that enables you to go from one solution to the next. No pricing has been finalized as this acquisition was just made. We should know more in the upcoming months. Rest assured we will always take care of our customers and make sure that they are leveraging the right solution.
This is the response I got from Solarwinds when I asked the question about ipMonitor.

Good questions. Just a reminder of what we said in the press release announcing the ipMonitor acquisition:
“SolarWinds will grow the capabilities of the ipMonitor solution and use technology assets from the acquisition to expand existing products. This world-class product evolution will provide network and IT managers a holistic view of their enterprise, helping reduce infrastructure downtime, manage network compliance and change, and improve staff efficiency.”
As you would expect, we do intend to leverage some ipMonitor features in an Orion module for application port monitoring to take care of our Orion customers and their platform investment. At the moment, we can’t say much about details or timeframes, but please stay tuned.
ipMonitor will also continue as a stand-alone solution. So, if you are looking to incorporate advanced application monitoring into your environment in the near term, ipMonitor and Orion are quite complementary.
