Network Performance Monitor (NPM)
Change "Type Icon"
FormerMember
I monitor a few odds and ends including a few SonicWall's.
When I add them into Orion they're detected as SonicWALL's and grouped accordingly but they're assigned the unknown type icon.
Is there any way of setting this to a small sonicwall icon?
I've also got a few Drayteks and other misc. stuff and so my collection of unknown devices is growing.
Is there anyway of setting theses things manually on a per-node basis as Orion's autodetection/dodgy SNMP stacks means I have a few odd bits and pieces scattered around.

I'd like to know the same thing

You can change this easily enough.
Open the database via Enterprise Manager and go to the Nodes table. Change the field "VendorIcon" to the icon you want.
Icons can be found here...
X:\Inetpub\SolarWinds\NetPerfMon\images\Vendors
Where 'X' is the drive you installed Orion on.

Remember to stop the Network Performance Monitor Service otherwise changes to the database will not be written

Hi All.
I've tried the above and it works for a few minutes but eventually reverts back to the original.
Do I need to turn off whatever auto-discovery is repopulating the nodes details?
Is it possible to do this without affecting notification of other changes I want to be made aware of?
Thanks

If you look in the following directories
\Program Files\SolarWinds\Orion\Maps\Vendors
\NetPerfMon\images\Vendors in the web structure
you will lots of image files which are named number.gif The number represents the vendor ID in SNMP. Just create your own logo for SonicWALL and save it as
8741.gif
This applies for any other vendor as well - as long as you know the appropriate vendor ID. Analyser Sales Ltd SolarWinds Premier Partner

Thanks, that works for the icons in the web interface (but not the console it seems) but I still have the problem where my custom changes are over-written gradually.
Is there any way to stop the changes being over-written?
chris.conway
images shouldn't get overwritten.
The changes to the db will as when a node is rediscovered - ie the vendor id will be corrected.

I think the image name 1234.gif is being updated with every poll of the device.
I think you could easily create an update trigger that would handle this.

How can you identify a vendor ID? I have several devices which come up unknown. Specifically I need vendor IDs for Redback, Valere, AFC and NextLevel.
Mithrilhall
What are the vendor IDs of the devices you listed?
chris.conway
to get the vendor id of a device, right-click the device in system manager and select Node Details.
The window that comes up will have a SysObjectID number in it
eg
1.3.6.1.4.1.
9
.1.516 - Cisco
1.3.6.1.4.1.
11
.2.3.9.1 - HP
1.3.6.1.4.1.
2334
.1.1.14 - Packeteer
1.3.6.1.4.1.
311
.1.1.3.1.2 - Microsoft
1.3.6.1.4.1.
8741
.1 - SonicWALL
The part in
bold
is the Vendor ID number

Thanks!
Now I see the icons correctly from the web view, but the "unknown" icon is still there in the console. Will it update on its own? I placed the .gif file with the vendor id number in the
\Program Files\SolarWinds\Orion\Maps\Vendors folder.

What happens if you rediscover the node?
kcraw99
Same icon remains after "Rediscover"
kcraw99
I restarted the services. I tried deleting and recreating the node. The real crazy thing is the database shows the correct filename for the gif in the VendorIcon column in the Nodes Table.....
