Hi All,
What is the best way to monitor the BGP in Solarwinds ? It via traps or Polling . If it is polling what's is the procedure to enable it ?
@thangaselvi this should work, i am assuming you are using neighbor alert as object.
On Show list do you see the ones that fall under this category ?
On Show list do you see
The custom properly is applied to Node only .or i need to update to interface as well. Will it work ?
Hey @thangaselvi
Traps are too chatty and it also gives you less feasibility in delaying an alert.
If you go with polling you can control how you monitor it and how you alert on it, like say wait for a certain period of time before you alert or wait for few polling intervals etc. where as you can control the alert completely, when it comes to traps the alerting trigger condition detects it via number of times the trap has come in etc or number of times it was detected, you consume a trap and fire an alert (feasibility of controlling alerting is very little in my opinion).
It depends on what exactly you are looking for, if you sense too much discrepancy via snmp polling that is when you should look at traps as an alternative.
for flapping via syslog its more easier only the issue is you have to enable notice & informational level log and it generates lot of data.
you can use below condition.
IF Severity Is Equal To Notice OR Informational
AND Message Contains BFD adjacency down
AND Message Contains BGP-5-ADJCHANGE
Yes, in SolarWinds, if you're monitoring BGP neighbor status using SNMP traps, you can automatically clear the alert when the BGP session is re-established, but it depends on how the alert is configured.
Configure the alert with:
You can try. H
Hmm… I don't know how to accomplish that, but maybe? If there is another trap that says the condition is cleared, there might be a way to clear the alert based on that. Not really sure how to do it, but there might be an inventive way to do it.
But, this is why SNMP can definitely be better also! It's a breeze to do with that…
Thanks can we do a auto clear of alerts when the BGP is established again in trap method ?
Traps are good for things that happen that are critical, but you have to match it to an alert that gets fired, otherwise it will put it up in your traps page and not do anything.
Polling works well, and I'm not saying don't do what's at the link above, but for simple stuff, just "List Resources" and choose your routing protocol and "Layer-3" monitoring there.
For BGP monitoring in SolarWinds, the best practice is to use both Polling and Traps, but Polling should be the primary monitoring method. Traps are best used as a supplement for real-time notifications.

I wanted to share a new dashboard a co-worker ( @mblackburn ) came up with to help us better view groups of interfaces and various metrics for each. Using a single HTML widget, we are able to visually compare numerous different interfaces by populating each interface dataset onto its own graph. We are able to view…

Alert Cleared.htmlHello, I would like to share the HTML template details we have prepared so that Solarwinds alarms can become more meaningful. It can list alarm object details and connected device details separately in HTML template. Except for object and device details, you can easily add custom property information…
