No one really knows. That is one thing that Solarwinds needs to do a better job of. I can understand maybe not posting that information on here but maybe an email to its paying customers once a quarter detailing the Orion, as well as the toolsets, product roadmap. I'd like to know what's in the works and what will be released next, timeframes, etc.

Not sure if this has been mentioned yet, but here it is. I'd like to have maybe a global flag that says whether or not "Node Name" gets automatically updated/changed when the "System Name" changes.

On occassion a server name or switch name gets changed even though its IP doesn't. The system automatically picks up this change in the "System Name", but doesn't propagate it to the "Node Name", so you have to manually do it yourself. I'd like the ability to make this automatic (except in the case of a blank system name of course!! Never overwrite an actual name with a blank one!!)

As an added bonus, I'd love on a per-node basis to be able to "lock" a name in. This would allow you to customize names, while still allowing others to change when the "System Name" does...

Well I think if they get the design your own MIB then all they have to do is provide some storage space and let users make the MIDS or OID's and we can download them. Even put in a user voting system and # of times downloaded and bingo--done

Yeah an Linux version wouldn't be bad. However despite the cost Server 2003 really has been peforming well for us.

Not to mention that it would slow down the development process consideribly.

I think the tool should be more then SNMP monitoring tool
it should monitor Databases , Applications , Windows Eventlogs

it should be all in one - the tool has lot of power and in order to complete it u need to look on other tools

there are other tools around like www.serverwatch.com that has the features above but luck the customization u can do with Orion

I think if Orion will have the options above , it will be a killer monitoring tool

If MRTG which is free can allow you to configure custom MIBs then I think Orion should as well. Just my 2 cents.

Just thought of another one :

I'd like to see an alert availabe that says if my cpu on a device changes more than X percent send an alert. For instance if I know the firewall runs at 50% and for some reason it jumps to 80% I should be able to configure an alert that says greater or equal to 30% alert me.

Looking at the release notes for v7.5, the added features were

Support for monitoring CPU/Mem ultilization on the Motorola BSR6400 7 the Arris C4 CMSTs.

Logic work around devices with faulty SNMP agents that lose time in the sysuptime counter

Added SQL query timeout setting for database manager

& additional icons for new system types.

And resolved two alerting engine issues -
Issue where alert actions would sometimes not execute
and alert engine would sometimes hang if database connectivity was lost while trying to trigger or reset an alert.

So I guess we really will have to wait for the Next major version release for any of the things we want..

Lets just hope that when V8 is released that they will have at least the custom MIB support

So, First of all, I really like the tool Orion, but I too have some additional requests that I would like to see.

Aside from the already mentioned custom MIBS (MOST IMPORTANT MISSING FEATURE !!!) and Port monitoring, I would also like to see:
* ISDN Backup (BRI/PRI) monitoring (These lines should be down but I don't want them to cause the node to have a red marker and when they go up, something is wrong) I understand this request has been around since version 5. (SECOND MOST IMPORTANT MISSING FEATURE !!!)
* populating custom properties during discovery. We use the location field as a container for 4 fields, separated by semicolons. I want to split those fields and populate them into 4 custom properties when a node is added.
* adding multiple nodes to the MAP in Mapmaker in 1 drag in stead of dragging each one separate.

I understand that in version 7.6 a SYSLOG server will be added. That's great news!

I just bought this product and I'm very disappointed that the port descriptions on my Cat6500 series switches are not populated automatically. As I have well over 100 ports per 6500 this is a huge pain in the ass.

How about before we trick this product out with all sorts of cool new features like syslog and such, we nail down the basics first.

besides all the other features people want such as custom mibs and such.....how about having ro snmp strings as well as rw strings and the ability to shut down ports or enable ports thru the web. I know you can shut down and enable ports from the manager, but then you have to have only the rw strings being broadcast everywhere.

That's odd. We have a few Cat 6500's and the ports all populated in solarwinds just fine.... on version 7.2 and 7.5.

NG...just read your post...its been almost a year since Don posted that CATOS port names were supported in V7.1. Like you and others I do not see that even as late as 7.6 beta. All I see is "short wave fiber gigabit ethernet" and "10/100 utp ethernet (cat 3/5)". I have to manually enter the names and its a HUGE pain.

Problem : Alert triggers when threshold is passed only 1 time.

Request : Have the ability to add a number of instances value before tiggering the alert.

For instance cpu's spike from time to time. All it has to do is spike once and the alert is triggered. I want to be able to say if the threshold is passed in say 4 consecutive polls then send the alert.

MapMaker NEEDS an undo function.

It would be nice if MapMaker saved a backup copy (.BAK) of the original when you save a map.

It would be awsome if maps were stored in the SQL Database. It sucks when I create or modify maps on my local PC using the remote admin tool and then have to manually copy them to the server.

Also a Function in MapMaker to right click on the node in the object list and select a function that would make the node blink or flash on the map so you can find it. This would be nice when working on large maps, or maps with many nodes.

You must be running IOS on your Cat 6500. I'm running CatOS and Orion 7.5 still does not populate with the interface descriptions.

2. Netflow
3. Policy based approach to alert definition. The polices can then be applied to the monitored objects. Unless I am missing someting, the current method is tedius and cumbersome and would the chances of unwanted alert noise.

Dynamic baselining - there is a radical change in traffic profile between work hours and non off hours. This creates a problem for us when setting alerts. Suggestions workarround are welcommed

Limited control to Suppressing Alerts using the Web interface instead of the GUI interface. We have UNIX people would have servers on Orion and the NT people don't want the UNIX Guys on the Server...

We need to suppression both globally and per-server alerts.

Netflow add-in - here is a link to a vendor that has a way to incorporate Netflow Monitor with Orion. Yes, you have to buy Netflow Monitor, but you may be interested in knowing about this possibility.

PS: I am underwhelmed by the fact that not many people seem to think that having a *scheduled maintenance window* is important. How hard can it be to integrate the capability to turn off alerts EASILY between 5am and 7am on Tuesdays and Thursdays? Even an inexpensive program like Kiwi Syslog can do this. Instead, we have to create several alerts -- one for Tuesdays and Thursdays, and another for the same group of nodes for the rest of the days. Multiply that by the number of alert rules you started with... it just does not match the ease with which the rest of the features operate.

I would really love to see the following incorporated into ORION. As a global organization (And I know there are other global users here) these are very important.

1.Being able to set someone’s time zone at the account level so that when they view online statistics they are viewing them in their local time zone (The website would perform a background calculation to show them their time).
2. Being able to specify a time zone when using report writer. This way it would perform a calculation between the collection time zone and the reporting time zone.

One could argue that NPM is a NETWORK performance monitor (up to L3 OSI). What you are requesting is monitoring APPLICATIONS (ports and services) - not the same thing.

I agree however that it would be a 'nice to have' - and in fact, should not be too difficult to achieve

This point is debatable in terms of who application monitoring is important to. Full scale proactive Network monitoring is much more than knowing that your routers and switches and servers are 100% up and available. I can tell you that requirements in net management have shifted an angle away from the typical throughput, If Util, and collisions, CRC errors etc type of stats to include notifications on Application brown outs before they happen. As a result I had to evaluate Concord, VitalSuite and several other Application performance monitoring tools.
I can see where it would benefit the developers of SolarWinds... and it customers, to come up with detailed and easy to use ( Just like SolarWinds) Application monitoring module to satisfy this piece the the market. I liked Vital Suite... it does network monitoring very well and the Application monitoring you pay for that piece separateley. Its modular like like the rest of them but the "rest of them" are way over priced or cumbersome or both or just unreliable...too many unexplainable gaps.
I'm using a ton load of distributed sniffers for application monitoring along with SW ( I ditched HP HopelessView the day I got SW) cause I like reliabilty for customer reports.
I know SW can come up with an App monitoring tool...it aint that hard.

My other request to SW would sure be a net simulator...prior to a deploying more gear on the network, and also a trend forcaster....also aint hard to implement cause all the necessary stats are already in the database.

The ability to change the ifAdminStatus of interfaces from the "Node Details Page".

As of right now I have to log into every switch/router when I want to turn a port on or off, which we do quite often.

(Edit: I see this is available from the Engineer's Toolset)

Also, the ability to save the running configuration to the startup configuration would be great. Saving the running configuration to the backup configuration would be a bonus as well.

One thing I haven't seen suggested is a more robust alerting system. For instance a definable alert escalation or only alert after "x". Two examples would be..

(Alert Escalation)
If node goes down alert person #1, if the node remains down after "x" ammount of time, alert person #2.

(Suppress Alert until X)
We reboot equipment from time to time and it's a real pain that everyone's pager/cell phone has to go off because someone rebooted a server. It would be nice to have a method of saying "do not alert unless the node has been down for at least "x" ammount of time".

Yes I want that feature. After porting over to ORION I realised that I am missing that feature which is very important to my NOC operations.

I wouild also want ORION to have a feature to receive SNMP Traps which can be filtered down and after that trigger and alert if necessary.

Sidetrack a little. Has anyone here overcome the issue of ORION not able to monitor Service ports. Do you have any alternatives to this?

What i would like is SLA monitoring. A lot of people have SLA's on their networks. and it would be nice to have a feature that we can monitor uptimes, latency's etc.

It would also be nice if the network monitor would see on port and protocol level. and see how much bandwith is being used by kazaa or another application.

Service/port monitoring is a must in SME organizations.

After that:
- Device grouping is a near must, when you have some hundreds of nodes.

If Orion goes down, you can still monitor ports/systems/services, and vice versa.

Using both's info helps in determining what kind of problems occur. However, our admins get thrown ungodly alerts when orion goes down, because Orion sends out alerts that it's down, then because that network section went down, it says that the services/ports went down, and everything on that server sends out an alert (7-12 alerts per occurence). So, having WUG/WUP combined with Orion may enable the ability of creating more cases of when alerts should be fired.

So, if we had these two functionalities combined, we could have it say:

1. If Network A is down, alert to fix Network A.
2. If Network A is down, and Services on Network A is down, do not alert.
3. If Services on Network A is down, alert to fix Network A.

Currently, when we run into #2 alerts for everything get shot out.

There might be something I can do to fix this with WUG, as I haven't looked into it a ton. I'm sure I could tie in a ping request to see if the network is down, or up, before producing an alert.

Outside of adding in WUG/WUP features, I'd like to see:

1. Having the ability to customize the Orion Website, which would mean having access to the .ASP files.

2. Access to the APIs' features in a very detail manner (Microsoft does a fairly good job of this in their online library)

3. More functionality to the report scheduler. Emailing and Printing are nice, but not as good as automaticly creating reports, exporting them as .html files, saving them into a directory, then having your webserver use that file as an update to a website. You may say, just let people view the reports via the "Reports" option that you can add to the Orion Website. Not a good thing. I can't have that many people querying the Orion SQL database to view a report. I just want snapshots to show daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly reports at... say 4 a.m.

Those are the things I'd like to see, so far.

One frustrating thing with syslog is the auto-refresh of the messages. If you have a filter or your looking at some particular device the auto-refresh knocks all of that away and you have to set your filters up again. I know you can disable auo-refresh but its good for your node status. It would be nice to have a check-box or something to freeze the refresh of the syslog or a stop/start feature with syslog.

I agree with Bryan. Perhaps the filter can be setup to use a different .asp file which is not setup to auto-refresh?

Another hugely useful feature would be 'saved filters' in Custom Property Editor.
This would save creating the same filter everytime I open CPE to cutdown the node count from hundreds to a few dozen.

Of course editing the Custom Properties from the Node Details web page would be the ultimate solution!

First, I have to say great product, even in version 7! I cannot wait for version 8 to be released! Here are some things that we are looking for in Orion.

Jitter or RTT graphing/monitoring (Specially necessary with VoIP quality metrics.
Cisco NetFlow Monitoring to get IP-based detail and application stats.
Custom OID Statistics Polling for other sundry SNMP variables

Ability to monitor traffic across VPN tunnels and I echo everything else stated. While I realize the primary focus of Orion is not application monitoring, it has been a super enchancement.

I'm generally pleased with SQL 2005, but all the DBAs where I work are more familiar with Oracle and Postgres, though I tend to prefer MySQL myself. However, having said that, I know how much of a monumental task such a change would be, especially since the SQL syntax varies between DBs. Database independence would be very nice, but probably just a pipe dream.

I have not yet tried the new alert engine, but on un-resettable alerts, there needs to be some kind of arbitrary reset trigger. For example, I'd love to get a reboot alert, but they don't clear on their own. I really, really think we should be able to have those alerts reset after a certain amount of uptime (e.g. 30 minutes). Due to the critical nature of the monitoring here, I can't shut down the alerting engine to clear out something which should be clearable, or can reset itself all on its own.

Ian Underwood - how do you get alerts from reboots in the new alerting engine? I thought it was something that couldn't be done.

My thought on the automatic reset would be to take some condition that will always be true, like "last boot time is greater than jan 1 1970", make that the reset condition after a 5-minute wait.

I haven't tried the new alerting engine yet, because I running the latest on an old development box. (New HW is on the way for out SW upgrade, though.)

The feature request was directed to the old alerting engine. There are a couple of other conditions too which don't have resets in their alerts either, but there needs to be a way to make them disappear without toggling alerts off then on.

Custom MIB(s) for temperature monitoring, we use Jacarta Interseptor units in comms rooms to monitor temp and humidity, we can monitor the unit to see the ethernet port but thats about it, would be great to see temp/humidity readings/stats for these units.

We use Netscreen devices in all our locations, and the ability to monitor the VPN tunnel status via SNMP would be extremely useful, not to mention the basics like CPU and RAM usage.. Can't do that now

Also, we have alot of off-brand equipment in circulation (mostly due to mergers) and there's little I am able to monitor since I can't load any device specific MIBs.

Audible alarming is available already. Tech support can help you implement if you need help. WHen configuring an alert, and adding the action to be taken, playing a sound file is one of the choices.

On this topic, I think it would be great if there were some API that could be released for additional packs. The application and wireless packs show that it can be done. However, I think more rapid development could be attained if some other programmers could hop in and contribute plugins to the product.

If there were an API of sorts available, then the expansions that people have been requesting here (Nortel, environmental monitoring, etc.) could be developed outside the main application. Having said that, this might be part of the evolution we've been seeing in the 7.x branch.

I've eagerly awaiting the release of 8.

Coming from a 30 year background in Event/Alarm management Management (Netcool, CA, Openview, Smarts, etc......) a very good area for the Solarwinds

company to improve upon would be the Operator interface for alarm,trap, event management. At my present location Openview remains due to the shortcoming of

Solarwinds as it pertains to these areas.

Phase 1 would be to improve the ability to manipulate the alarms, events, traps and why not syslog too:

Event and alerts list requirements:

Note: The requirements listed below are for both the Orion alert and event lists.

ø Acknowledge, deacknowledge, prioritize, delete, and resolve one or more selected events or alerts.

ø Assign ownership to one or more selected events or alerts

ø Search the event or alert list for specific events

ø Apply filters and views

ø Acknowledging and deacknowledging events

The ability to acknowledge and deacknowledge events or alerts in the list only if you have permission to do so. Based on Operation creditials and roles assigned.

ø Prioritizing events

The ability to prioritize events in the event list by changing the event severity, escalating or de-escalating the event, suppressing the event, hiding the event, and indicating that the event is "in maintenance".

ø Assigning ownership to events

When an event or alert is received , the event or alert is owned by the user “system” unless ownership of the event has been assigned to a specific user. Users with appropriate privileges can take ownership of the alert or event throughout the problem lifecycle, or assign events to a specific user or group.

ø Refreshing an event list

The event list refreshes automatically at regular intervals to show all incoming alerts. We require the option to refresh just the event or alert resource independent of the entire Orion Web Refresh. The option is needed to choose to refresh the event list between the configured intervals to view all the latest alerts

at the current point in time.

ø Resolving events or alerts

From the event or alert list, you can display a list of known resolutions, which are determined by the class of the event or alert.

ø Deleting events

We need the ability to delete an event and only if you have permission to do so.

ø Adding events to a task list

The ability to add events or alerts to a task list to identify events that require special attention.

Traps/Mibs -etc the ability to load mib trap definitions automatically and than massage them. This is probably the only NNM tool that I like.

You're posting on a really old thread. The first post was from 2003 and the last post before yours was 2006. We have released quite a few times since then, and most of what's requested in this very long thread has been delivered.

I'm also wondering what version of NPM you're using because v9.5 can do quite a bit of what you're asking for here. We replace hp all the time. Have you tried v9.5?

I am running the latest version! Most of what I have stated has not been delivered. In fact we had Solarwinds enginnering and sales visit the Veterans Affairs Departmnet back in Januarary 2009. As a followup to the meeting tey requested I put together the requirements for an advanced alarm browser which I did. We have not heard any response since that email thread. I will be gal to foward it to you.

Audit tracking would be great.. somthing to track who deleted, added, updated nodes, accounts, and APMs would be a good start..

I agree. We've been asking for this for years. Hopefully, SolarWinds will recognize there is a need within the community for this and fill that need.
