I have been building custom resource items. If you are interested let me know and I will send you the files necessary to make everything work.

73-TotalNodesVendor.Resource - totals the number of devices of each vendor type
81-AllNodesGrouped.Resource - groups nodes by vendor and creates a show/hide vendor nodes list
82-AllNodesbyVendor.Resource - same as above without the fancy show/hide feature
83-AllNodesDetail.Resource - a report (table) that lists all the nodes in the database first by vendor then by type. Include IP address, type, vendor, CPU, and memory.

One could argue that NPM is a NETWORK performance monitor (up to L3 OSI). What you are requesting is monitoring APPLICATIONS (ports and services) - not the same thing.

I agree however that it would be a 'nice to have' - and in fact, should not be too difficult to achieve

to include layers 4-7, so I'm hoping to put it on their radar screen.

I'd have to agree with Gonzajoh, application monitoring is a nice to have feature, but is not really what Orion is all about.

My number one request is still having the port descriptions for Cisco Cat switches show up in Orion just as the router interface descriptions do.

Editing each port with a server's name is very time consuming on a fully loaded 6513, as well as maintaining these descriptions on both the switch AND Orion, every time a server is added, moved or deleted.

Agreed that the port monitoring feature needs to be included..

Another feature request would be to be able to right click a node/interface in a web browser and enable/disable monitoring of that node/interface. In a multi user environment this is crucial. Our helpdesk does not have access to the actual NPM server but I would like them to be able to acknowledge and/or disable an alert to keep things in focus.

I have to agree that fixing popular switches like the cat 6500 would be great. I have also noticed other products like F5 boxes that don't report correctly. To me getting these working correctly would be more important than added functionality.

I just discovered cisco NBAR (network-based application recognition) that will do the port monitoring and was wondering if Solarwinds plans to add support for it> I have found multiple published SNMP configs for this so should be a BONUS add on to beat stuff like CONCORDE in the app market, because Orion kills everyone else in what it does.!!

I don't believe you people missed sysloging! It would a heck of a lot nicer to keep a syslog capture in via Orion for each device.

Don't get me wrong, the Kiwi SysLog daemon is the bomb, but I can't imagine this would be too hard to implement. Just accept syslogs from IPs which devices are registered under in SW, and reject all the others. I imagine traps could be handled the same way.

Ability to receive SNMP traps, but for me, syslogs are just as important. Most network kit generates more useful information in it's syslog messages than in it's SNMP traps. Some network kit only supports the most basic of MIBs, but their syslog output is very detailed and could be used to generate useful alerts.

Ability to compile MIBs into the MIB tree like in HP OpenView.

Ability to gather stats on custom MIB variables.

When i spoke to a developer at Solar Winds. unoffically they said some of this stuff was planned to be in version 7, but got dropped in order to release the other stuff in version 7 early.

we are glad the grouping, new maps, custom properies, and big time improvement in alerts was released early. it made all the difference to us. also, we had to have customer reports on the web. and now it's easy to do in version 7.0.

as for an offical statement of what in the works and what's not ... the developer I spoke to said they wern't allow to publicly make one at this time. that's ok i guess since all of the changes we asked for were implemented over the past year from 6.0 to 6.3 and now 7.0.

First let me say that V7 is a major improvement.
Additional feature requests:
1) Time over threshold monitoring ala Concord eHealth. As fas as I know in Orion v7 you're currently limited to setting a static threshold value for % memory, cpu, disk, etc. It would be extremely useful to set a threshold for 90% over 60 minutes instead of 90% over 1 poll cycle.

2) I want to monitor uplink ports on switches, but none of the other ports. In the alerts config, if I choose Interface Status as the property to monitor I can't choose the interface I want to monitor. I have to monitor all ports/interfaces on the switch. The only way that I'm aware of around this is to delete the interfaces from monitoring, but then there's no performance data.

JS,

1) You can do this in a crude way, by setting the statistics polling to whatever
time interval you want, on an individual node and/or interface basis. We poll ours
every 15 minutes, which seems to give very good results with no "false alarms".

2) I have set alerts for individual switch port status on our Cisco switches.
Only interfaces should show up in the "monitored objects" list when you select interface status.
What kind of switches are you monitoring ?(our Nortel and Baystacks also show only
the interfaces when selecting interface status from the alerts config).

In order to effectively manage a network You need to be able to customize the MIB's.

Currently I have to use the Polling cycle to send an alert regarding my Cisco Router for % over 5 minute time span. There is already a MIB value to alert on that comes with the Cisco IOS for 5 minute interval.

Here is my 2 cents for a new feature...

I would like to see a Replay Mode. I'd like to go back to a period of time, let's say within the last 7 days, and begin replaying all stats for all nodes/interfaces from a given date/time and refreshed based upon a user-definable replay interval using the Top 10/TopXX views. For example, this would be helpful in seeing a full network picture of all resources at a given date/time and provide helpful clues in problem isolation (i.e., a network slowdown).

I would love to see an On/Off switch for node/interface monitoring.

ie, I'm monitoring about 1000 nodes, and around 3500 interfaces. It gets annoying, when users shut down equipment, and monitoring reports this as a down node.

It would be a great help in the web interface to "administratively" discontinue monitoring

1. Custom MIB support (or manual OID entry, tied to a node, with units and variable types chosen manually)... this single feature would eliminate the need for so many third party mom-and-pop shop custom apps, and even a few commercial ones that just look like them...

2. SNMP Trap *and* Syslog reception... coupled with the ability to import custom MIB's, would turn Orion into a fully centralized L2/L3 network infrastructure and event management application. Alternatively, integration with Kiwi Syslog for alarming and/or live and post-mortem event reporting would also be acceptable.

3. Basic service/port monitoring with SYN/SYN-ACK responses time logging would be useful, but would not eliminate the need for full L7 application transaction monitoring... perhaps the addition of something that would run a simplistic script and check the data stream for a particular string of characters?

4. The ability in the web interface to administratively disable Orion monitoring of a node, interface, or volume, without tripping an alarm.

DTuloJr, you echo my thoughts exactly. I was just in a meeting yesterday regarding increasing our infrastructure monitoring. I told the people in the meeting that I was evaluating Orion but they lost interest in it when I told that we can't use custom MIBs. Much of what we need to monitor is not in the standard MIB.

We also require basic port monitoring, like testing a web server to see if port 80 or 443 is listening.

I like Orion but I'm not sure I'd could sell it to management as-is. If custom MIB support and port monitoring were added it would be a no-brainer.

Here's another feature that I would LOVE to see: get rid of IIS and move to Apache or some other web server. Everyone in our IT department seriously dislikes IIS and our technically-minded Executive VP doesn't even want it in our network, if at all possible.

If Orion supported custom MIBs and port monitoring *and* it ran on a different server, we'd be customers within a week.

Just a comment in here on the anti-IIS comment...

The problem isn't with IIS per-se. The problem lies with the default security model being very lax, and with admins who don't keep up with server patch levels. To dismiss the program on the grounds that it runs on a Microsoft platform is faulty logic, because any platform can be open to exploit.

The beauty of Orion is that you don't need to be an expert to set it up and start collecting data.

Well it's been almost 2 years now since I've been asking for CatOS Catalyst Switch port
description discovery. Once again I have been let down by Ver 7.1
It seems as though this will never be implemented, even though I have done the MIB walk
and sent the MIB to Solarwinds Development.
It appears as though this product will never be CatOS switch friendly :<(

I'd like to see a net flow add-in to be able to drill down in the traffic charts. It is great to know that you have high utilization, but the followup question is why and by whom.

I's also like them to incorporate the MIB walker tool into the monitor. If you can find the MIB, then you should be able to monitor it. All the code is already there.

Netflow would definitely be helpful.

It seems as if a lot of the features we're asking for would work wonders as separate applications...you know, like other tabs next to Network Performance Monitor, with some kinds of links between the three applications. (Netflow, SysLog/Trap, etc.)

The reason I suggest this is because running Netflow would ultimately require a database of its own, and another server to act as a collector. This would be important because detailed stats would need to be boiled down constantly into specific intervals, lest the database meltdown in a thermal fury of high CPU.

An Orion Netflow Monitor? If it were easy to use, I bet I could get management to buy off on it.

This would definitely have saved us a lot of money.
We just purchased a whack of distributed sniffers and taps to find out what is causing the events seen by Orion.
Admitted, this does give us far more visibility and troubleshooting capabailites than Netflow, but we may have gotten
by with Netflow as a start.
These sniffers have hard drives which capture and analyze the traffic and can create Application Response Time
historical graphs.

There are certainly many more features and avenues to explore for the Solarwinds dev team.

I created a menu item called "reports" with 3 columns. Each column has multiple groups/headers for different report groups.

E.G.

Column 1 - Availability Reports
Header 1 - Routers
Header 2 - Switches
Header 3 - Servers

Column 2 - Utilization Reports
Header 1 - Routers
Header 2 - Switches
Header 3 - Servers

Column 3 - Events & Top 40 Reports
Header 1 - Routers
Header 2 - Switches
Header 3 - Servers

You can do a lot of customization with new pages using the "add Menu Item" to toolbar
along with the "custom views" menu. You can even link to other report pages from the first
report page you have created.

The CATOS and port name function does not appear to be working in V7.1. That needs to be fixed if it hasn't already.

I'd also like to see the following :

1. Launch any report or graph directly into pdf for better printing. Have a PDF icon to do this like the Execl icon is on each graph.

2. Abilty to monitor launch the toolsets (properly installed on the server and licensed) to have real-time monitoring...like watch the utilization on a circuit interface in real-time.

3. Like it has been said before, incorporate the syslog server into the web page.

Actually, you can launch the toolset applications from within the system manager. However, that's not going to happen from the web page as there aren't any standard URLs to make those kinds of calls to applications. This could theoretically be done with ASP, but then you essentially lock the application into Internet Exploder which would certainly make me unhappy.

PDFs would be neat.

Here are a couple of Report Writer requests:

* Incorporate graphing functions into reports.
* Incorporate a "Master Report" style which would be a collection of smaller reports. That way, more smaller reports could be put into one viewable page.
* Support a tiered query in the report writer. For example, in the first query, I ask for a list of nodes that have Multilink or Virtual-Access interfaces. Then, based on that node list, give me a list of serial interfaces.

Map <--> Node details <--> Map web navigation

I would like to be able navigate back and forth between nodes and a map containing nodes without using a browser back button. For example, say you start with a overall map, then go down to a state map, then uner that have maps of sites in that state. A site map shows all/some of the nodes at that site and if you click on a node it takes you to its node details. Then say you want to look at the nodes NIC or volumes etc. You have to hit the browser back button twice to get back to your map in order to view another node at that site.

For those of you that may have used WUG before, from a node details view, you could return the the main part of that node, or the map that node sits in using links and not the browser back button.

Sorry if this has been requested before. If there is way to do this, someone please explain.

Short of editing the ASP code, the cheap and nasty way to do this, is right click on the
node or interface and select "open in new window". You can also hold down the shift key
while clicking on the link to open it in a new Window. Then your map stays open, and you get
a new window for the details of whatever you have selected.

Grouping in the system manager would be great. Also the ability to make mass changes using the shift or ctrl key to select certain nodes.
It's a pain to make a change to all of the nodes, also it would be easier to manage if you can group the nodes like Active Directory.

Setting up alerts amongst a list of 500 nodes or 2000 interfaces is also a lot of work.
It would be nice to use a filter based on a custom property to select which nodes/interfaces you
actually see to setup alerts, or even base the alerts on a filter/tag of a custom property.
Using something like a Report Writer interface to create your alerts would be ideal.

I had suggested some time ago that creating 95th Percentile reports would be a good feature.
Someone at Solarwinds had agreed this would be a nice feature, but I have not heard anything else
regarding this.

The ablity to interface with the Network Performance Monitor from the web portal would be a major benefit, Plus the ability to use some of the functions from the tool engineer sets / or link the two.
Functions like Ping, Telnet, TraceRoute, Admin Ports Up/Down, Web Brose from the web portal.

The ability to feed a delimited IP address list to ALL the applications. On large corporate non-contiguous networks it is impossible to effectively scan by single IP, subnet or range. We've got UNIX scripts to do this effective at the command line level, but not everyone is a comfortable with modifying UNIX scripts. I would like to see Solarwinds add this to its tool sets.

I know Orion shows latency but thats between the server and the device. It would be great if you can set up IP pairs that Orion can track latency. This would be equal to what Cisco does with it's IPM (Internetwork Performance Monitor). I want to see the latency on a frame connect between 2 offices.

The Engineering Edition has a little util called "Proxy Ping".
I haven't checked, but if it can publish the results to a web page, then you could
add that page to your Orion server. Of course, that's assuming you have the EE.

I did something similar using the Network Management util, by mapping a drive to my
Orion server. EE is installed on a different PC and I wanted to see the total of how many
different users logged into some remote sites throughout the day.
I set the app to scan the network every 15 minutes and publish the result to the Orion
server. I then just added a link to the results (in a //inetpub/NetPerfMon/Pingresults folder) in Orion.

Thanks NG...we do have EE on the server but it would be nice to do all of that in Orion. Proxy ping does not allow for publishing to a web site.

As for people posting about Netflow...Solarwinds is working with NetQoS to provide that functionality. They expect to announce the details soon.

1. Ability to make a copy of a View
2. Ability to set a filter(SQL) at the View Level. The resource filter works, but a global filter would be great.
3. Ability to automate discovery.
4. Ability to import a list of devices
5. Ability to place a node in Maintenance Mode for X hours
6. Ability to Group Devices in the Win32 App
7. Ability to Manage Nodes(add/delete/edit) from the Web
8. Ability to set/override thresholds on individual nodes.
9. Ability to launch tools from webpage on a node (ping,traceroute,telnet, etc..)

Currently, I'm stuck creating the same view each time I want a view with differnt group of nodes. I always create the same view, but I have to manually edit each resource filter..

I would like to create a generic view, then send a specific query...

Example1:
solarwinds/.../View.asp Like '%CITRIX%'

Example2:
solarwinds/.../View.asp Like '%SQL%'

Example3:
solarwinds/.../View.asp Like '%EXCH%'

Example4:
solarwinds/.../View.asp Like '%TRADING%'

The idea is to create one view, but just display the nodes that match the query on the page...

Not sure if you are aware of the "Search for Nodes" view, but it basically
does what you are looking for. You can search for nodes based on any property,
excluding interface of volume properties.

It can be added to the webpage by selecting "Search Nodes" from the Node Lists
drop down radio button when you customize a view.

It is an extremely useful feature to quickly find what you are looking for.

We monitor over 700 nodes with over 1400 monitored interfaces. We have a lot of devices taken out of service for Maintaince etc. Its a big problem when you remove a device for say one week and you have to sit there seeing it in alarm. If you delete the element then the map its attached to needs editing as when you re-add the deive to the polling engine the map does not reinstall the device, and you lose the historical data.

So can we please have a feature to Pause monitoring on selected device and interfaces than delete and then add

There is an unsupported feature within the Orion Version 7 software that enables you to temporarily unmanage a device. To set up this feature, you will need to add the Value String of Allow Unmange to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/SolarWinds.Net/SWNetPerfMon/Settings folder. Then set the value to True and restart the Orion service. When you right-click on a node within the System Manager, there will now be an Unmanage button that will allow you to unmanage a device until a specified time and date.

We monitor over 700 nodes with over 1400 monitored interfaces. We have a lot of devices taken out of service for Maintaince etc. Its a big problem when you remove a device for say one week and you have to sit there seeing it in alarm. If you delete the element then the map its attached to needs editing as when you re-add the deive to the polling engine the map does not reinstall the device, and you lose the historical data.

So can we please have a feature to Pause monitoring on selected device and interfaces than delete and then add

I tried this on my server and restarted the NetPerfMon service, but I fail to see the "Allow Unmange" option when right clicking a node in System Manager. The key I added was "Allow Unmanage", not "Allow Unmange".
Perhaps the key needs to be created with the typo?

I know it's been asked on here before.

Looks like the catalyst I'm having trouble with isn't registering any if Alias values...which would definitely explain the problem. Looks like it's fixed in a later revision of CatOS.

I tried setting "Allow Unmange" and then "Allow Unmanage" String value to True, however no Unmanage menu item appears after restarting the solarwinds sevice... Does this require a reboot?

Janis...couldn't get the unsupported feature to work on 7.2.2. Don't see any Unmanage button or menu item when I right-click on a node. I stopped and restarted service and even rebooted server. You identified the Value String to be "Allow Unmange". Even tried "Allow Unmanage" in case the it was mispelled.

Sorry about the confusion. The string is "Allow Unmanage" and the correct folder location is HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/SolarWinds.Net/Orion Network Performance Monitor /Settings. A restart of the service should be all Orion needs in order to look at the new setting.

Now that it appears we can turn off management of devices for a certain time frame, it would be particularly nice to be able to unmanage interfaces as well.

Particularly useful when a site is going to shut down for planned work over the weekend.

Edit: I'm looking at how this information can be usable in the web engine.

So if a device is unmanaged, does this mean it's removed from all alerting as well?
When we are doing maintenance at 3AM, it would be great to unmanage the device so that
everyone else on the team does not get SMS'd awake. I will be trying this next week
when we shut down a router and replace it with a newer one.

Unmanaging interfaces would also be a very beneficial feature. Sometimes servers are
shutdown for OS upgrades, etc. and the switch ports show as down. This way we could retain the statistics for the switch port/server, without cluttering up the home page
with dozens of down interfaces.

Works! You have to right click on the node, and select Node Details. There will be a UnManage button on the right.

The Unmanaged node never automatically returns back to Managed after the pre-defined time.... Is a SQLagent job or stored proc required to do this? I also tried updating the Node table, and the Web site updated, however the GUI didn't update and must use some other flags for this..

It would be particularly nice to unmanage a node from the web interface, instead of on the poller...and I've been looking at how this can be done, but there is no way that I can see to get the poller to read the status if it's set from the web engine.

Perhaps there needs to be a new table which the poller reads from time to time for "instructions" which can be sent from the web engine for things like unmanaging nodes.

Additionally, it would be nice in the event log if it would also say when the node was unmanaged until.

I would really love to see the following incorporated into ORION. As a global organization (And I know there are other global users here) these are very important.

1.Being able to set someone’s time zone at the account level so that when they view online statistics they are viewing them in their local time zone (The website would perform a background calculation to show them their time).
2. Being able to specify a time zone when using report writer. This way it would perform a calculation between the collection time zone and the reporting time zone.

same results here. I have been able to update the Nodes table with the unmanage settigns, however the poller does not pick up the changes
