Took me a couple of years, thanks to DPA initially, now we are running SQL Sentry ... we have the database optimized now that we can drill down to the user causing additional wait times. We are in control; I could not say that 4 years ago!
A customer DBA who doesn't understand databases and keeps "fixing" things that we then need to revert.
Its all of the above. Handling performance between cloud/non-cloud, multiple datacenters, scaling growth without paying more than your company's net worth, and keeping the DBA team from running away from the office and screaming random comments about the data....
Other: Corporate took our access to DBs away and now we have to deal with outsourced teams that do not understand or environment.
I do not manage DB's.
I chose "other". My biggest challenge is being motivated to do database stuff. I'm more of a network guy and hate database stuff.
I'm an accidental DBA once in while so I don't really know how to optimize database performance and now we have Oracle, SQL Server, mySQL, DB2, and PostGreSQL o.O!
