I would love to be able to change the refresh rate to 1 minute for some views that are more "real-time" and lower the refresh rate on other views that are just global status updates.

cahunt well, my back, legs, and head currently disagree with your statement.. and we still have 7015 miles to go, before we catch another plane. These planes are a total opposite of the Tardis... for such a huge plane, they are way small on the inside...

"It sure would be nice to actually hear from SolarWinds on this" bump
Paging rob.hock and DanielleH bump
It seems to me more granular page refresh timers are a kludge to fix a deeper problem. Would the following solution set obviate the need for this specific feature and bring other benefits?:
Rob Hock no longer works at SolarWinds. Feel free to page peter.ksenzsigh, DanielleH, or I.
cobrien I think having the resources pull the data they need is a terrific improvement over full page reloads/refreshes.
I also think the data being displayed would show better if the charts refreshed and scrolled over automatically, as a "real-time style" refresh instead of an "everything, whether it needs to or not" refresh...
Being able to pause the reloads/refreshes on BOTH the resource level and page level would also be very usable too.
I say both, as I may have the need to apply it to only a resource or two on one page, but need to pause everything on another.
Thanks for the hope,
-Will
Between Christmas and New Years Bump...
Jfrazier Would the set of changes I suggested above cover your needs?
Thanks for touching base cobrien, it's the first we've heard from SolarWinds at all. I suppose we're having a hard time understanding the lack of movement behind this request. Personally I've interpreted it as a complete lack of interest from SolarWinds. The issue with the web console auto-refresh is a daily struggle for a lot of customers, seems to me that something like this should have more traction.
Nick, I have seen things in the voting stage get partially implemented or even fully implemented without a "we're working on this" stage.
I suspect they have been trying to figure out how to re-architect the UI frontend to accommodate this. I also suspect they have been run ragged after the latest big release (sam 6.2, npm 11.5) fixing new bugs. On that front, some things may have had to be moved to a web based interface before they could start working on how to rebuild it...just an opinion of mine.
nickzourdos, to the contrary, this issue is something we're keenly interested in. I apologize for not stopping by sooner to explain. UI annoyances that do not affect functionality could be seen as less important. If I'm reading in between the lines properly, it seems you're worried we may think that's the case. The fact of the matter is we all spend most of our day on computers, and the UI is how we interact with the computer. Annoyances that do not break functionality still slow us down, irritate us, and overall make our interaction with the computer less effective and less enjoyable. That's a big deal. I have yelled at my computer screen when I'm mid-outage, finger on screen to analyze a specific point in an NTA graph, and the whole page disappears. We need to fix that.
In many cases, the easiest thing to do is to introduce a new knob, a new setting, as suggested in this feature request. However, that puts the burden of understanding and fixing the problem on the user. Ideally, we should understand the fundamental problem and find a way to fix the issue for most or all users without imposing on them. And if we step back one more step, we should try to understand the relationship between many problems and try to find the common thread. Fixing the root cause of a common thread can solve many problems, and do so in a way that makes the UI simpler rather than more complex.
Now, with that in mind, take a look at awelch's post Introducing: Orion User Interface (UI) Refresh. Particularly the "Rome Wasn't Built in a Day" section. This is the overarching solution designed to solve this feature request and many others, and it's something we've been working hard on for quite some time.
That leaves me with one question. Would the set of changes I suggested above cover your needs?
"First bump of the new year," thread bump...
cobrien , as I mentioned earlier it would help. familyofcrowes indicated, other tools are tied into this and the page refresh can be awkward at times when trouble shooting or showing an executive something...Heck, even during tours we sometimes put up a background image of a Orion screen so it doesn't refresh while the various screens are being explained.
Jfrazier I find it funny how people tend to do the same things, in the same ways, to work around an issue. I have also used screenshots to display what I needed to in our Orion environment.
familyofcrowes and Jfrazier, in regard to these scenarios:
if you are in NCM or NTA doing research and the page refreshes. Or, when working in IPAM and you looking things up and it refreshes and you get to start over. And my biggest issue is using Orion for presentations, it makes me look stupid when the exec's request that the metrics data not refresh every 2 minutes when they are asking questions concerning a specific graph.
Wouldn't these all be solved by not refreshing content that hasn't change (configs, for example, that don't change often) and providing a page-wide pause button? How would those continue to persist if you used the pause button?
A Pause button would be nice.. but the same way that you have the option to set the refresh rate for the NOC view we would like to be able to adjust refresh rate of specific views.
Adding the option to the customize view section would be the easiest place to adjust. Any pages built for meeting/showing off purposes can be set to the needed metric to prevent the issue of refresh in mid review.
Just My Idea.
On that note, some people or groups want/need different refresh rates. A global setting is not appropriate or granular enough...
