Advanced alerting complex conditions request for assistance

OK, so basically I just want 1 email if one of my sites goes down since if the router or ISP is down, so is everything else, however I still want to get alerts if a node at the site goes down, i.e.:

At the site there is 1 router, 1 switch, and 1 server. I want to be notified if the server goes down. If the switch goes down I just want the alert for the switch (since the server is also down I don’t need that alert). If the router goes down I just want that alert since the switch and server are behind the router.

So far this is what I have setup:

Trigger Alert when all of the following apply:

Node status is equal to Down

Trigger Alert when any of the following apply

City is equal to <city name>

Yes I have the same City name for all the nodes within that site. With this config I get alerts if any of the nodes are down.

I'm fairly new to SolarWinds so any help is appreciated!

Hi oklier,

One solution is to build an Alert suppresion based on the different dependencies between the nodes in thier site. It is explained in detail here:

It's not perfect but it might work for your setup. I suggest reading the thread in full before taking any action.

So after reading that thread, I'm in the same holding pattern as everyone else .

Oh well. Is there a feature list I can be added to so that when the feature has been fixed I can receive an alert email?

You should be able to do this through building dependency alerts. There are several posts here on thwack that address dependencies and alert suppression. Try these and let me know if they help.

My guess is based on long ago this question was your not working on this anymore. This would be for other viewing the question. My best guess is to look a different variable like the gateway interface of each sit on each respective in to the environment The gateway interface or the Node name should reflect in a descriptive way what its purpose is IE; Dallas_VZ_Sales. When the node reports down you would know that the city was down on the Verizon side. The other redundant side would be named Dallas_ATT_Sales. Once you train the alerting for node down you would not need custom complex variables. If you cannot afford full connections then unfortunately you would only know about the entire site. That would be my idea of how you could be aware that the site internet connection went down.
