Device status indications.

Question

What monitoring aspect of NPM produces the status that a device is "UP"?   I've changed the SNMPv2 poller to an IP that I know is not authorized to poll the Cisco node, but the status on device main page says, "Device is UP, (and Green), but device polling is not allowed/working".

So, what part of the NCM process is still indicating that it believes the device is "UP" when it also knows it can't poll?

Not a system issue for me, but I need to understand the underlying workings of what I'm seeing.

@jackpdixon77 Polling a network device for status is done through ICMP by default, but can be changed to SNMP if desired. You can see this by running list resources on the node.

Node polling is more a function of the Platform so NPM and NCM should be reporting the same status. Depending on your settings, by default Orion will poll/ ping a node every 2 minutes. If this node does not respond to a ping we will begin what is referred to as fast polling. This will essentially ping the device at 10 second intervals for 120 seconds. If the node responds it will be marked as up. If it does not, it is marked at down.

If you are able to ping the device from the Orion Server - you should see an up in the web console. I am not sure what you mean by changing the SNMPv2 poller to an IP that is not authorized to poll the node. Status again is done via ICMP. We obtain more details and statistics from the node by leveraging SNMP.
