I noticed with one of the latest advertisements that you can monitor current connections on VPN appliances from Cisco. How do I go about monitoring the current connections on an ASA? I have upgraded to NPM 9.0 SP1
How do I go about monitoring the current connections on an ASA?
Withe the "billy bad-a**" Universal Device Poller! It's sweet. Your Orion has to have SNMP access to the ASA.
Thanks that helps. Did you create the defined poller or did you download it from somewhere?
Did anybody ever reply as to where you get that defined poller? Is it something you download and then import into the Universal Device Poller?
Thanks!
Hey, John, if you created that one, it would be fairly slick if you could post it to the Content Sharing Zone.
Defining is the first step in creating a Universal Device Poller. If you already know the OID that you want to poll, provide it in the OID field, and then the Name and Description fields will auto‑fill. If you do not know the OID you want to poll, click Browse MIB Tree, and then either walk or search the MIB tree to find the OID you want to poll.
More detailed steps for each field option can be found here http://www.solarwinds.com/NetPerfMon/SolarWinds/OrionPHUniversalDevicePollerDefine.htm
There is a custom poller under content sharing/custom poller/vpn. I used that and was able to retrieve the number of vpn connections. I would really like to pull more vpn information, like peer address or username. I am still looking on how to create those.

John,
What's to hate? Let us know how we can make that thing better, if you have ideas...

What's to hate
Well besides the fact that it takes a right long time to load and to apply custom pollers, it doesn't clean itself up very well when you remove a poller. Just a few issues that adds to the hate, but on the flipside I do remeber having to do custom pollers from scratch...
I don't hate it but the load speed is annoying, also displaying the results needs improvement.
First is the non tabular sorting of pollers, we spent time grouping common pollers together in 8.51 and now in 9.0 they're alphabitized. (see screenshot)
Second, Tabular poller counts are included on the Universial Device Poller Status Resource, I think this should be there for testing but there should be a check box on the resourse to enable/disable the inculsion of the tabular poller count.
Third, more control of labeling and ordering of colums on the tabular poller resource.
But don't get me wrong its a big improvement to be able get tabular data, but this is version one.
JB
The load speed is a known bug; it'll be fixed in SP2. The other issues are improvements we're considering for future releases.
