I've spoken with a member of the sales team who told me that they don't intend to support fiber channel switches till the end of 2008. When I explained that this type of hardware is the de facto standard in SAN environments and should be a priority I don't think I was taken seriously.
Sadly this is the limiting factor that my customer see's as the roadblock to purchasing Orion.
Peace,
Dean
Dean,
I think that's a mis-interpretation of our roadmap. The Sales rep asked me about it, and I said that I couldn't promise that we would have support in the first half of 2008. That doesn't mean it won't happen, but it means that I haven't had engineering size the effort so that I can figure out which release we can get it into. Moreover, the more requests I see for this functionality, the higher priority it gets.

We will be adding "get table" support for our custom MIB poller fairly soon. Would that get you what you need for Brocade switches?
Also, which models are most important to support?
Thanks,
It's not only the Brocade, it's McData, Cisco, any fibre channel switch that is major market. Many companies grow via acquisition and will have any combination of these. I currently have McData and Brocade, my last customer has HP branded Brocade.
Ideally I'd like to see the FC ports with TX, RX, state (up/down) perhaps WorldWideNumber and errors. This would be a TREMENDOUS selling point for enterprise class customers. I've been pushing the SolarWinds toolsets for 7 years now to all my customers. Why spend 250k on OpenView when I can get the same detail from Orion for 50k out the door?
Please, please and please get us FC support!!
If we could monitor custom MIBs stored in table form, would that help?
Hi Denny,
The "get table" feature will be helpful. I'm sure you're aware, there have been many references to the Brocade (http://thwack.com/search/SearchResults.aspx?q=brocade+AND+sectionid%3a9&o=Relevance) Silkworm series switches because they are pretty much an inudstry standard for any Storage Area Network install.
We recently completed a new SAN install from Dell | EMC, and I was really dissapointed at my limited abilities to monitor them. The basic MIBs are loaded into Solarwinds already (presumably for Brocade's other products). If Solarwinds Engineering was able to create a decent MIB set and possibly package it somehow, it might be helpful.
I think in general, though, the "get table" feature will be a big help to getting similar issues resolved for many of the hardware types and brands.
Great. "Get Table" is a key feature for Orion 9.0, due in Q2. We literally won't ship without it. I can't promise that we'll be able to pre-build the MIBs for any specific Brocade devices. Our first priority is to get the capability in our customers' hands, then we'll proceed to work with customers and with vendors such as Brocade to build up a list of pre-packaged custom pollers.

Great! Again, I think there are a lot of devices that will benefit from this feature, especially the Brocade switches.

This is understandable. I know it's difficult to request work on a limited set of hardware from a specific vendor. I think the Brocade line is really one of the first vendors I've come across that has been this difficult to integrate. All good things come with time - thanks!
