I have setup NPM to show wireless controllers and AP's. Is there any way to set NPM to send alerts if an AP goes down?
Are you looking for thin AP's or controllers or autonomous AP's? With 9.5, we ship some advanced alerts out of the box in advanced alerts around AP's you can use or use as a starting point to customize
we are using cisco controllers and cisco lightweight ap's. I can see the controllers and all ap's on orion in the wireless tab but dont get alerts if they go down. I was hoping it would alert the same way a node would on the network. I am now thinking I need to add the ap's to the maps? any ideas
cheers
Do you have this alerts we ship enabled?
Alert me when a Thin Wireless Access Point goes down
Thanks bshopp
I didnt have this enabled. I found this alert in the advanced alert settings and enabled it. I have added an action to send an email to alert a group of people.
to test this I disabled the switch port. the controler shows the AP has gone but orion does not email alert or show the AP as down. after 10 min refreshing the wireless page on orion the Ap still shows as up.
how does orion get the info from the AP? how long does it need to be down before Orion will see it as down, update the wireless web page and send alerts?
thanks again.
mick,
Have you tested the alert action itself to confirm that it is configured correctly for your SMTP server? Or, are you able to get any other action (e.g. logging the alert to a log file or the Windows event log) on the same alert to occur correctly?
I have enabled the 'Alert me when a Thin Wireless Access Point goes down' alert in the advanced alerts. I have added a valid email address in the trigger and reset actions.
I have shut down a thin AP by shutting the switch port.
events:
switchport shut down
wireless controller removes AP after approx 1 minute
orion wireless page shows AP as down (red icon) after about 10 min.
no alert triggered, nothing in syslog.
APPOLOGIES.
I did receive an alert but it was 12 minutes after I shut down the AP so I missed it.
however the email only shows a mac address. how do i get it to show the AP name? I have recently rolled out over 300 AP's over several sites so I need more info in the email.
Ive worked this out.
thanks for your help guys.
this works fine now but theres a 10 minute delay from the AP going down to orion reporting it.
This is probably due to the polling cycle you are on for the controllers. Since the thin AP's are children of the controller and not their own nodes we get this info from our stat poll.
So couple options. For the controllers turn the stat polls down or add the thin ap's at ICMP only nodes.
Only different would be as apart of the controller we do not charge a license for the thin AP's, but if you add them as ICMP only nodes you will get charged a license
