I have been given a list of websites (some hosted internal, some external) that need to be set up in SW for availability monitoring.
I've never done this before. Where do I begin to do this?
You can simply apply the HTTP User Experience Monitor to any managed node in Orion. If the node is external you can add a new external node and apply the HTTP User Experience Monitor to it. Node status isn't monitored for external nodes, only the applications assigned to them.
Another option would be to take a look at our Synthetic End User Monitor, which has been purpose built from the ground up for monitoring websites and web based applications.
So it doesn't matter what node I use to set these up?
Also, I'm using APM 4.0.2 SP4 and I don't see any monitor called HTTP User Experience.
Hello,
The exact names are "HTTP Monitor" or "HTTPS Monitor". These monitors contain URL field that you can enter any URL address (then it doesn't matter what node is assigned) or you can use ${IP} macro in this URL field and then this macro will be replaced by IP address of assigned node (this is better solution when you create common template for more nodes).
I hope it helps,

When I assign the HTTP Monitor to a current node, I don't see any URL field. The only thing I see is a set credentials screen.
By Default the HTTP User Experience Monitor is configured to monitor the URL http://${IP}:80 where the IP address is the IP of the node it's assigned. You can change this by clicking the "Edit Application Monitor" link in the top right of the component monitor as pictured below.
I have about 40 websites, all internal, that I am trying to monitor. For most of them I will be using the HTTPS Monitor. We are using smart card authentication for access to about half of the websites. Most of those sites are reporting down (red). How do I properly monitor a website that is using smart card authentication?
The HTTP/HTTPS component monitors in SAM don't currently support smart card authentication. This is something better suited for Synthetic End User Monitor. However, if you're trying to achieve basic application monitoring for these web sites you could use a simple TCP port monitor in SAM configured to monitor port 443. That should tell you if the web server is up and accepting connections.
AlertBot.com is a great service for availability monitoring. I've been using them for over a decade.
