How do I setup an alert for all my nodes that after it is has emailed me 1 alert for a condition it no longer sends the same alert over and over again?

Currently when a node goes down I get alerts every 5 minutes which results in hundreds of emails when a node goes down over the weekend.

Have you confirmed whether escalation is enabled for your defined alert action?

yes it was enabled under the Edit Mail page action---alert escalation tab.
