Receiving Traps?

Folks,

I'm new to this, so excuse my ignorance in advance:) I also couldn't find a similar thread, so please provide a link if this has already been discussed.

I have Orion V8 - Eval. I'm trying to send traps to it from a non-recognized/supported device. It can't see those traps. Here are my two questions:

1) How can I verify the trap receiver is functioning on Orion? I don't want to poll the device, just receive traps from it.

2) How can I import the trap definitions for my device?

Hi there.

I have the same problem, and I'm also new on this product. I have a snmp device attached to a 230V to 48V converter and it sends traps to Orion Trap reciever, but it's no alarms or events in the web gui.

Please send me an note if you figure this out

I did figure out that you have to use the "Trap Viewer" to see the traps. They're generic traps, but you'll see them. Apparently you cannot import a MIB yourself (they'll do it in their next software rev), and if you don't have the MIB, you're SOL.

Just use the "Trap Viewer", a separate program, to view the traps.

If the device is sending traps to the Orion system they should be visible on the Orion website. If the traps are viewable from the Orion Trap Viewer, then they're being stored in the database and should also be viewable from the website.

Are you seeing the traps within the viewer?

Regarding the trap definitions, if you will send the MIBs that you need added to Support@SolarWinds.Net we can get them added for you. That said, our current MIB database contains over 400,000 MIBs so the trap definitions may already be in the database.

Hi again.

The trap viewer grap the trap and put them in the database. And I've also added the web-trap-viewer to the portal (traps.asp), but I don't want to see the trap, I want an alarm or event based on the trap.

My trap look like this in the web gui, when i do an simulated error:

As you can see, the battery is on "Major" status, but no events or alarms.

Btw... I've got the vendor's MIB-Files!

The traps do show up in the trap viewer, but not in the Orion App....either under alerts or events. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure there is some sort of configuration I'm missing, I just want to get more detailed info from my traps, and to do so, will need to import a MIB. The problem is, the device I'm trying to import a MIB for (Uplogix Device) does not have a MIB at all since it does not have an SNMP agent, it only sends traps. I have an OID list and a trap-definition file for it, but no MIB.

Sounds like I'm SOL in the short term....

Q: Is it possible to receive SNMP traps (not SNMP poll) and get alarms or events into Orion web gui based on the traps?

A: Unfortunately, that is not a capability. The Traps only show their alerts that have been triggered within the ‘trap viewer’ program.

I have the same problem. I ran a sniffer on the orion server and the traps are getting to it but the trap viewer doesnt display them. Does anyone know the fix?

One suggestion to try would be to use the port scanner to verify that you do not have more than one app listening on port trap UDP 162-

I used the port scanner from the SolarWinds Engineering tool set and interestingly enough it says that the port is closed even though the trap receiver continues to tick off received traps.

How would multiple apps be detected with a port scanner?

The SolarWinds port scanner did not allow me to differenciate between UDP and TCP..

I am running both the SolarWinds and Microsoft SNMP trap service. Could this be causing problems?
