Hi Thwack,
I'm trying to find out more about Overview page usage. How often to you go to this page? How do you use it? Does it provide the information that you are looking for? Would you like the page changed in any way?
Thanks for the feedback!
The only purpose for it IMHO is to access nodes that you've filtered out on your other pages. For instance lab equipment that doesnt meet the requirements (IE SNMP location) to be show on the main page. If you design your Orion installation properly the overview should not even be necessary.
Short answer - I never use it - though I must admit it is usefull in the design phase when setting up Orion.
I've never used it. Don't have any intent to.
I've never used it either... It's not that it's not providing useful information... it's just effectively the same thing I'm seeing from the front page in my "All Nodes" tree... it's slightly different... just not different enough.
Never used it... removed it from all my menu bars.
Never use it. As said previously there is no point if you have All nodes on your sumary page.
i use it and like it (based on nearly 25 years of experience in networking - i know a good thing when i see it).
I like it and use it as well. It has a uniqueness and flexibility to it that is different from the other resources and views available with Orion.
That's an interesting comment there... and I think I can see what you mean by it. I'm probably one of the very few people who have literally ZERO network devices in Orion. No switches, no routers. We're all host based monitoring which is just a teency bit weird considering this is a network monitoring package and the core of it is designed for monitoring infrastructure based devices.
I can definitely see where it would provide a benefit to larger network devices to give you a glance at all the components of a given device in one easy view.
From a server/hosts perspective where we generally only have 1 or 2 or 4 elements I need to look at on a given device it doesn't really offer anything day to day... though admittedly some of the "views" are cool to look at on occasion.
It has a uniqueness and flexibility to it that is different from the other resources and views available with Orion.
I'm a bit at odds with this comment. The view has a resource with no flexibility, no edit or customization options. The information that is presented in a mouse over is useless if you have to scroll down a page and then hover over an interface. You can't see the hovered data the page up. The view shows you ICMP monitored nodes, which completely lack any of the information available in the drop downs, beyond "response time" data. There are no SQL query filtering options. If you have hundreds or thousands of nodes you monitor, this view is pretty useless.I'm not knocking if you find it otherwise or like it, I just can't say I agree with your comments that it is flexible.
Flexibility, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder I suppose. I meant that one can display differnet data about nodes or interfaces by choosing it from the drop down at the top of the page.
I also typically like summary level views because they let me know at a glance whether anything needs my attention.
In any event, the Overview has value to some people and not to others.
We do not use it and have also removed it from all of our menu bars. As others have stated, it's not as useful in larger environments with thousands of monitored devices, and we prefer to just see the things of interest. Most of our views are set up primarily to show areas of trouble (or potential trouble), but we also have resources that allow us easy access to see info about elements that are not presently having issues.
Removed from all menus. I think the page is great for an out of the box orion set up, and small networks that dont devot much time to Orion mgmt and upkeep.Once people get into custom properties, custom views, account limitations, etc, the overview page is useless.
