Orion NCM-SL200 and Netflow

Should the NCM v5.0 RC work ok with Orion and Netflow? I orignially had memory problems and support advised me to move Cirrus to a separte server. I moved it to the old server I had available (a VM) with plenty of resources and performace is terrible. I would like to move it back to pysical blade server with Orion to also take advantage of integration features but only if it will co-exist with Netflow and VoIP modules. All versions are current.

Yes, NCM v5.0 RC should work fine with Orion 9.0 and NetFlow 3.0, but it's important to note that integration does NOT require that NCM be on the same machine. Would you please detail the exact setup of your Cirrus environment? I'd like to better understand why your seeing performance issues.

1) Number of nodes

2) VM: CPU? Memory? OS?

3) Is SQL installed on separate machine? If so, what are the specs of that machine?

4) Are you running SQL Express?

Thanks for the response. Here are the specs:

1) 144

2) 2.10 Ghz Quad Core 1 GB RAM: Windows Server 2003 Standard SP 2

3) SQL 2000 on physical server. Same DB server that Orion DB is on. I know believe the server is "stressed" and cannot keep up with all the Netflow etc and I am pushing a better standalone server just for Solarwinds (especially since we have VoIP module coming in the next couple of months). Hardware specs are Intel 3.4 Ghz with 3.5 GB RAM running Server 2003 Enterprise SP 1.

Symptoms include taking 5 minutes to open the Cirrus interface and often minutes to respond to a click on a menu item. Before the upgrade yesterday more than one user lgged into Cirrus caused CPU to hold at 100%. Development team discovered this to be some sort of bug and was supposed to be fixed in v5. CPU looks better but performance of the program interface is much much worse. Navigation around the web site seems ok though.

We are going through a large IP change company wide and I really really need the Find MAC address functionality that is available in the program interface but it is almost unusable at this point. I have taking about 5 minutes to type this and the Cirrus Manager is just now opening although the Getting Started screen has yet to fill in.

Are these DB issues, VM issues...? Any help at this point is welcome.

As you are probably aware, the I/O requirements on SQL server on very extreme for capturing NetFlow due to the nature of that protocol. Therefore, moving Cirrus to another machine but pointing to the same stressed SQL database server would likely not improve performance much.

Are you saying that (all other things staying exactly the same) you've seen a performance degradation in the Windows client after upgrading from v4 to v5 RC? If so, can you please describe exactly what you are seeing?

Although I am seeing an improvement in CPU numbers. I am still seeing poor performance within the manager interface. Sometimes it is the same poor response as before (mainly delays in responding to mouse clicks when opening node info etc). The big thing that is different now is it is taking 5 minutes and up just to open the application. I will continue to play with the interface today and have another user log on and get their opinion.

I am glad to hear that it does not have to be on the same Orion server to take advantage of the Orion integration. Also, is it possible to create/save command scripts from the web interface? How about using the Find Address feature?

Another customer has reported this issue as well. We're looking into this one. Are you experiencing a long delay on Node refresh as well?

Not yet, but both of these are definitely on our roadmap. How would you prioritize the order in which config operations are added to the website?

E.g.

1. Execute script

2. Upload

3. Download

I have just confirmed with two users logged into Cirrus Manager CPU runs at 100% almost constantly still. It seems each user has the service Confirguration-Management.exe and each one users 40-50% CPU.

This is becoming critical for us as the application is becoming more and more unusable. How can I determine if this is related to VM, SQL server or application?
