SQL Server specs please

Our current setup consists of 1 Orion Server with Network Perf Mon, Cirrus, NetFlow, and SQLExpress as our DB. Needless to say this is very taxing on the server which prompted me to shut off the NetFlow service, so we are not using the full functionality of the monitoring software. I’m looking to purchase a SQL Server 2005 DB to run in conjunction with our Orion server and just house the db on that server so we could start using Netflow. Can someone please give me a suggestion on minimum hardware requirements and configuration?

I figured the following might be a good baseline but please give a suggestion:

Compaq DL360

Storage: 4 HD = 438 gb on raid5 for SQL db

2 HD for O/S and logs

RAM: 6gb

CPU: ?

O/S: Windows 2003 Server standard

SQL Server 2005

How many elements are you monitoring, what are your polling and statistics collection intervals, what's the current size of the database, and how often do you run really large reports?

Personally, I like the DL380-G5's

Just a note... Win2003 Server Standard only supports a max of 4 GB of RAM. With 6 GB, you'll need the Enterprise version.

We are monitoring 196 network nodes with 706 interfaces in 15 different states across the US and some in London.

Polling statistics encompass 600 seconds for nodes, and 1200 seconds for interfaces.

Statistics are collected every 10 minutes for the nodes, and every 600 minutes for interfaces (I am just realizing this is way too long for interfaces, but what would you suggest?)

The current size of the database is 2.8 GB, but keep in mind that I have NetFlow service disabled because of the 4 GB max storage limit in SQL Express, which is why I need to move to the full blown feature.

We have been using Orion and collecting data on our nodes for only 6 months, however we are continually expanding by purchasing venues or opening offices. We project that this year alone we will open up 100 new sites which will also be managed on our network, so another concern is how much data do I really need to archive and how long should I keep it for?

You are already monitoring at least 900 elements (you didn't mention whether you are also monitoring any volumes), and if you are going to expand as much as you say, I would consider upgrading my license to SLX soon.

Also, you will not be able to continue to use SQL Express due to the limits on the DB size.

Of course, enabling NetFlow will only accelerate the need to make these changes. Data archiving policies are really up to you, but again, given your rapid expansion plans, I would bet that your retention policies will change as well.

I dont understand what it means when you say whether I'm monitoring any volumes, or upgrading my license to SLX, can you explain that to me? As far as the SQL Express goes that's why I disabled netflow because of the db limit on it, which is also why I want to move to a dedicated SQL Server. But I think I have all the specs I need for the server thanks for your suggestions.

Additionaly, how much HD space would you recommend this server have?

I believe borgan is wondering whether you're monitoring any additional elements like disk volumes on servers.

SLX is the licensing edition of Orion that allows you to monitor an unlimited number of elements. You may actually be running this edition of Orion already but you didn't say.

This is going to depend several different factors such as the # of elements, your polling interval and how long you keep your statistics. I have no idea what kind of additional impact NetFlow will have regarding the database size but with 400GB, I can't imagine that disk space will be a concern for a few years.
