When I add nodes to NPM (Cisco routers and switches, HP Procurve switches) I only get the option to monitor layer 2 and 3 topology. How do I monitor specic device ports? The tutorial video suggest that it should be possible.
For getting details of Port and Resources information, you have to add the Device through SNMP. Will you please confirm are using SNMP or ICMP.
Yes it is using snmp v2
Just to confirm; under 'manage nodes', if you search for, and then select the checkbox next to a node in question, then go to 'edit settings' you should see a portion of the settings where your SNMP options are. Fort, comfi that the device is indeed setup for SNMP polling, not ICMP. Then, please click the 'test' button there to confirm SNMP communications.
If that fails, there is a problem with Orion polling via SNMP. Usually this is either due to a mismatched community string, or an ACL/Firewall rule blocking SNMP (port 161) traffic from the Orion server(s) to the device.
If the test passes, then I would go back to the 'manage nodes' screen, find the device, select it, and then click on 'list resources', this will poll the device and then list out every data point (topology, hardware, interface) that Orion can monitor for the device using the default MIB. If you still have problems here, try a UnDP. If that fails, then it's time to open a ticket with SolarWinds support.
Sorry for the typos, using my phone.
Yes it passes the snmp test, and when I go to list resources all I get is topology layer 2 and topology layer 3. I am not sure what you mean by a UnDP
UnDP = Universal Device Poller.
By default, SolarWinds only has information (MIBs) for XX number of devices. One of the strongest features of SolarWinds is the ability for anyone to create new pollers for almost any device by using the UnDP to make device-specific pollers. I would highly recommend a look at this section of the Admin guide, and I believe there is an official YouTube video as well.
To get back on point however, you are saying this is happening with Cisco switches. My experience is that almost all Cisco switches are natively monitored in NPM. I would open a support case with SolarWinds for full resolution of your issue as this sounds a little "wonky", to use the technical term.
If you do find resolution, I would be interested to know what the root cause was if you care to post it in this thread.
Good luck!
