Printer Management
i've been pro-printer mangement for a long time but i can't sell it to IT Management.
i can show giga-tons of network traffic - errors - and time-savings but no luck here.
Actually I brought it up because our company is trying to do this now. We have some appliance we are trying out that will scan for printers and actively watch them for stats and will alert for paper outages other issues etc. This I think is mostly to get a handle on the cost of printing more than to simply manage printers.
But what a module it would be for Orion.
sounds good...and i agree Orion should be on top of this with a Printer Domain Dashboard
we have some really big Xerox all-in-one printers that would do well with this scenario.
if you can pass along that appliance name then i'd be interested.
If you know the MIB info... could'nt a universal poller be created?
My dilemma is we have Zebra's which does not publish their MIB info nor do they use SNMP.
They do sell a printer managment tool though!
I agree printer managment is huge.
Hi All--
This is marked for PM to see but you should be able to created a UnDP as G suggested. If you succeed, can you please post details here for the community?
Many thanks,
M
Can you give us more detail about what you mean by printer management? What are the key use cases you want to solve? What would an ideal solution look like? Do you see this as a separate product or a feature of one of our existing products?
Today I'm using the printer APMs that work via WMI.
They do not provide printer specific details. For example, a print server has 50 printers on it... I want details regarding each printer not a summary. Today I get the total number of job errors for all 50.
We have a large amount of Zebra label printers. WHen they have problems production can slow down.
Well in our case we are a large company with about 2,500 printers we know about. We are sure there are plenty others hidden here and there.
Our use case would be to be able to discover all printers on the network, identify them, maybe gather stats from them (pages printed etc) and be able to alert on things like out of paper, out of ink etc. The idea is to manage the entire printing enviorment to get an idea of what is being spent on paper and ink and printers and be able to manage those resources.
Zebra has their print server MiB listed here: http://www.zebra.com/id/zebra/na/en/index/products/software/zebralink_connectivity/zebra_print_server_mib.html
You have to register, but...
