We have a shortage of switch ports, so we would like to find out which ports were inactive during a given period (in DOWN state), e.g. from 2 months ago until today. Is there an easy method how to answer this question?

Yes there is. Create a report and use this:
The 2880 is 2 days. for the last 2 months, use 86400
For the table, you could use soemthing like this:
You can change this on what you want shown.

Go to Settings (top right corner), Alerts & Reports >> Manage Reports, then Select Export/Import and Import this report in.
@sans - I am unable to download the XML file that you posted. Saying "unauthorized". Not sure if it's just me, or others having the same issue.

@sans Thanks again. I have successfully downloaded and launched your script and as result obtained "No activity to report". It's undoubtedly because I don't know how to create the report needed. I did't confess it explicitly in my first response but it's the sad reality. My request on "step by step" description related also to the very first line of your first answer "Create a report and use this:"
