Server Specs

Hi,

My question is, what are the server specs to be able to run a stable Network Monitoring System base on the number of elements?

This is what I have right now on my servers:

Elements     7669
Network Node Elements     614
Interface Elements     5530
Volume Elements     1525

My specs are on my signature below and so far the RAM on the SQL Server is constantly on 95% (28.8Gig) which I read is normal due to SQL.exe memory hog.

We are going to buy another Polling Engine server Jan 2011. Just waiting for the elements to reach 8000 which I read was the maximum number of elements per server. With the polling engine server, is there a server spec recommendation? The server is purely going to act as a polling engine and nothing else. Some node will be migrated from the current Web Server to the new Polling Engine to reduce the stress it's currently experiencing.

We have also purchase APM AL100 which we may upgrade to AL500 depending on the features. Adding the APM module to our existing Web Server may make things worse until we get our 2nd polling engine server.

Here is what we have found to work

Orion Server + Modules

Quad Core Processor 3GHz or better

16-32 GB RAM

2 x 146GB 15k Hard Drives (RAID 1/Mirrored Settings) The Orion server only needs 10-20GB’s of space so whatever size here will suffice.

1GBE NIC

Windows 2003/2008 Server (64-bit) with IIS installed, running in 32-bit mode

.Net 3.5

Additional Pollling Engines Orion Server

Quad Core Processor 3GHz or better

8-12GB RAM

2 x 146GB 15k Hard Drives (RAID 1/Mirrored Settings) The Orion server only needs 10-20GB’s of space so whatever size here will suffice.

Windows 2203/2008 Server (64-bit) with IIS installed, running in 32-bit mode

I will use your specs for our Polling Engine Server. The Web/Polling Server is on 32bit because we originally started on NPM version 9 and back then, I read issues running on 64bit OS. Now the NPM 10 supports on 64bit 2003/2008, we may look at upgrading our server later. Not much users login to our Orion web console and is mainly use for hosting 3 LCD displays and polling nodes.

Question, will there be any issues if I use OS 2008 standard 64bit for my polling engine considering I have a 2003 32bit Web?

If one is currently running in the 32 bit mode and therefore limited to using 4 GB of RAM by the OS, are you recommending the 16-32 GB RAM on the application server purely in anticipation of the day when Orion will be a 64 bit app?

You can access more total memory for Orion, the OS and anything else running. Also 10.1 pollers take advantage of multiple cores.

Not sure what you mean Andy. Can Orion access more than 4GB RAM or not? I always understood that the 32 bit OS meant that there would only be at most 4 GB RAM available for all things running on the machine.

You are correct. But if the OS is limited to 4GB then everything on the box has to share that.
