Sanity Check Please...

Afternoon All

We are teetering on the edge of purchasing the following Solarwinds Products and wanted to run it by those who've done it / sell it for some sanity checking.

We have circa 800 nodes and will be monitoring over 2000 interfaces, so...

1 x NPM SLX Licence
1 x NCM DL1000 Licence
1 x NPM Hot Stanby Engine
NTA for NPM ???
1x LanSurveyor (for my laptop)
2 x Engineers Toolkit (1 to integrate with NPM and 1 for my laptop)

Hardware will be 3 new servers, (aren't we lucky)

1 to run both NPM and NCM on. (big spec)
1 SQL 2000 SP4 Enterprise Server (for NPM and NCM)
1 to run the Hot Standby Engine and a Non Solarwinds IP Address Management Database Product.

Questions :

We want to use Netflow to monitor a few (circa 20 key interfaces) and are not prepared to pay £8,000+ for an SLX license to match the NCM license. Therefore would it be possible to run a separate NCM SL100 and NTA SL100 setup on the same server as the hot standby engine (which is covering the main NPM and NCM server) ?
Can you buy all these products with extended maintenance periods e.g 3 years (discounted of course... )
Any recommendations / obvious schoolboy errors ?

That won't work. Each Orion server will think it's the "boss" and there will be conflicts.

Why wouldn't this work out of interest. These would be completely separate instances of Orion, they wouldn't be sharing data or databases. Surely this is the equivalent of having 2 remote installs which is what the EOC was developed for ?

Or is it simply that the standby engine can't sit on an Orion server, even if its not a standby for the orion thats installed on that server. ?

If this is the case we can move the standby engine to its own server and let it back up both SLX and SL100 orion instances.. Its still circa £6,000 cheaper than buying an NTA SLX licence to monitor 20 interfaces.

Different database would be ok, but you can't have an Orion server and a Hot Standby on the same box. The HSE is a special case of Orion, so it would be like running two Orion servers on the same box. Not possible.

The HotStandbyEngine can only back up one database, not two separate databases, which is what I think you're describing.

We have around 800 nodes but 25k+ interfaces. Are most of your nodes computers that you are monitoring? Just to give you an idea, we have 3 Orion servers and two DB to keep up with this and we are outgrowing that.
